hi all this is my first post i have been an avid reader of your posts for some days now but have come to a bit of a dead end now:bang: on reading previous posts about the judder and engine light on i thought it may be as many others on here a faulty ignition coil? but checked them all today and all were fine (pulled all out 1 at a time etc to check etc) i purchased a diagnostic kit which showed up p1653 and also brake sensor (reset and only p1653 returned) thing is i dont know where to go from here i'm sick of the judder it tends to happen when i either put my foot to the floor or if i accelerate in 3rd (selespeed 2.4 abarth) my question is what is it spark plugs? injectors? variator???? i am not really sure what a variator is! any help would be greatly appriciated and (y)to a great forum!!:slayer:

1653 is the code for variator.. however, i don't really know how the ECU would know that there is an issue with the variator.. the only feasible hypothesis i can offer is related to the knock sensor.. with the timing being advanced some 2 teeth the dynamics would change.. i say this is the only feasible hypothesis because only the crank and exhaust cam shafts are monitored (and variator sits on the intake cam shaft).. perhaps someone here would be able to enlighten you regarding this.. however.. i would think it more likely that your problem is related to the phase variator solenoid.. as that is an electronic part the ECU may know when it does not work at all <and, as far as i can remember, it would show the same fault>.. thus do a search here (this was covered a countless number of times).. if you've an older type - it maybe easily fixable given you've access to a soldering iron..) look at this link: https://www.fiatforum.com/barchetta/101793-how-phase-variator-works.html to find out what a variator is and how it works (once you’re up to date.. you should be able to ask a worthwhile question – if that is the case.. people here would be happy to help you)

just tried to take the top off the variator but could only manage to remove 1 screw and rounded the other:mad: i was wondering about your post and if the timing belt is in the wrong position would it cause a judder? baring in mind that the previous belt did this? does the free diagnostic soft ware on this site tell anything about the variator or will i need to get the top off to test?

also any pics of the location of the nock sensor(y)
just sprayed what i thought are the knock sensors, took off the plastic protector and right behind the engine at the back there is a blue connector took it out turned engine over and engine wouldnt start sprayed connector plugged back in. then sprayed the ones on the right of the blue connector 1 black then a orange one (quite pointed) plugged back in, cleared the code then took her for a spin came back (usually comes up with the code error) guess what........... no error result!! however i still think its not over but i am forever the optomist like many other fiat drivers! i'll keep u updated
