Technical Grinding noise

Ah .. I know.. one of those "I've got a strange grinding noise" posts.. .

The Younger Mrs S. reported a strange grinding noise coming from the front end. It's not the clutch.. it happens just when the car is physically moving, so it's related to the wheels going round. It sounds like the noise an exhaust heat shield would make if it was rubbing along the floor.. (I did look.. but all clear).

It's too dark and wet when I get home to have a good look so I'll leave it until the weekend (car not used until then) but anyone have any idea what could have failed?

The noise seems to be coming from the driver's side.. but I'm not entirely certain about that... I just drove it a few yards to listen to it and note the symptoms.

Car is a 1108 Cinq' Sporting.. box-standard and 70,000m.

I'm hoping it's something like that... but it did worryingly sound like a bit of metal being dragged along the floor.. which there isn't... but still "expensive" sounding..

Have a good look at the engine mount under the passenger's feet. When it starts to fail it causes weird grinding noises, rapidly followed by an awkward gear change.
