Morning guys right my mrs's sister has the Mk2b Punto 1.2 8v and she asked me to look at the car as its making a grinding noise when turning right, so i had a quick look round, drove the car and it does make one hell of a grinding noise but only when turning right. Now i looked underneath there is no grease come out of the CV boots and everything looks in order then she shown me the previous MOT certificate and one of the advisories is:

003: Steering column top bearing slightly worn [2.1.1c]

Now straight away im guessing this would be the problem as this was the last MOT on the 18/07/2014 any ideas on how to sort this problem and is it something i could have a go myself? I rang PuntosRUs in Rochdale to ask for a price of a refurb one £15 but he said ''if i was you i would tighten all the nuts up first on the column and rack'' but if this is grinding when only turning right id think it would be the bearing and that the whole thing needs replacing.

just had same on mk1, suspected driveshaft, but later turned out to be wheel bearing, to eliminate wheel bearing problem, remove driveshaft from suspected wheel, start car, put it in first gear and slowly accelerate -driveshaft will spin and listen for the noise, no noise = bad wheel bearing

This sounds like a proper recipe for disaster !!!

So leave the gearbox open to allow all sorts of dirt and crud to be drawn in, whipped up by a running engine ?

In addition take half the car apart to do so when it's really easy to test these things without having to

what are you talking about?

ohh you thought i removed driveshaft on one side and drove the car around? LOL!, i thought it was common sense to know to still leave the car jacked up while putting it in first gear to try to replicate the noise, i should be more clear

No you moron do you have no concept of how a gearbox/differential works?! You'd know you can't drive around with a drive shaft removed

Your proposal is to jack the car up and run the engine and gearbox with a gaping hole in the side of the gearbox pumping gearbox oil out and letting dirt and crap in?

If you had any idea what you were talking about why not just rotate and look for play in the drive shaft anything significant enough to rumble is going to have a fair amount of slop in the offending cv joint, or if you're going to the extent of removing the drive shaft entirely then just spin the wheel on the hub and listen to the easy to hear and feel bearing rumble, there is absolutely no point in running the engine with lots of risk of causing damage to the gearbox

No point going to "mechanics school"

As i'm now finding the hard way.............

Buisness dont want somebody with a bit of paper - they want somebody they can train there own way
No offence to kwik fit - but i had an interview, they dont wanna know what i've done, they dont see the relevance of it all

I tbh came out that interview 100% feeling ****, because im finding that 3 years of my life was tbh wasted

This is not really accurate, they DO want 'bits of paper' (if they are relevent).
They look at the whole package though - which bit of paper ? - some are merely excuses for the government to fiddle the unemployment figures,
They look at age, fitness, weight, presentation, physical appearance, colour, race, communications ability, the full monty.
Whatever the law may say about discriminatation they certainly do whatever they want. (as it is virtually impossible to prove otherwise)
You mentioned you were 17 stone. Unless you are 6 foot 5 and 17 stone you will be classed by some employers as overweight and they will seek people who are 'fitter' or appear 'fitter' - to fit their expected front office (customer facing) image. No offence meant to you, it is just the way it is.
People with 'body piercings, tattoos, wierd hair styles, horrible thick accents, etc etc etc..
Unfortunate facts of life. Harsh but true.

Im a tall guy who carries my weight well

But been slightly older vs new boys coming out is the other problem i have got
So much so - i dont have my DOB on my CV's to help prevent that

Ziggy
Yup, good idea Ziggy. It really is a travesty at the moment in the job market. It is a shame you cannot set up on your own really.
If you can find a place you would really LIKE to work, you could try offering a month free trial. Anything that breaks the mould and gets you noticed / foot in the door.
Fingers crossed. !
