hi,

some advice needed please.....

we have an 03 1.2 punto. it gets us around, though is pretty rattly and bumpy, so wouldn't be inclined to get another

we need to upgrade and there are a few 07 grande puntos (again, 1.2s) nearby which seem a decent price

are these much more reliable, better ride etc than the old version???? worth getting?

thanks a lot

i used to have a mk2 also, the gap between them is unbelievable. If i was you, id try and stretch for a 1.4 and as higher spec as you can! But whatever you get will be a level above your Punto.

Better ride, poorer visibility, fantastic stereo and feels much bigger than a Mk II. I would try to buy a 57 plate or later in order to avoid teething troubles on earlier cars. The GP is heavier than the Mk II so the 1.4 engine (or 1.3 diesel, if you do a medium-high mileage) is a better bet than the 1.2.

all interesting stuff, so thanks for the replies.

unfortunately the local garage seems to have a few 07 1.2s so it might be that or nothing!

considering folks have said the GP has the same 1.2 engine but heavier body, can anyone tell me this:

a) is the new fuel economy (of a 5 dr model) markedly less than with my current 3dr mk2 (which is cheap to run)

b) is the performance much worse (my mk2 is hardly fast, but could almost qualify as 'nippy')

c) if its the same engine, will it have the problems associated with the mk2 (the uncurable judder sometimes when taking off)

thanks

MPG is still good and i think its about 14 seconds to 60 or something.

The Judder you are talking about is normally caused from a warped flywheel so not the engine itself :)

It appears to be just me who thinks this...but i really couldnt justify spending the extra money on the 1.4 over the 1.2....the difference in performance is hardly noticeable at all.

As for a GP over a MK2 they are worlds apart, seriously, you wont believe how much better the GP is in every way.

i drove a basic 1.4 when i was buying my 1.9mjet sporting (they didnt have an mjet sporting to test drive lol). going from a 1.2 to the 1.4 you can notice the differance quite a bit, the 1.4 engine pulls alot better then the 1.28v engine in the base model. the 1.2 is nippy tho i only had my 1.2 for a year and a half and the only fault i had with it (06 model) was the clock spring snapped in the stearing wheel disabling the steering mounted audio controls and the airbag system which the dealer fixxed after a month of ordering the wrong part. i agree with the majority tho, try and go for a 1.4 as the engine is more potent.

Well,

i woke up this morning to part-ex my 03 1.2 8v punto for my 06 1.4 16v sporting grande.

difference isnt the word.

Along the motorway it pulls much better, and the 6th gear adds that extra saving, roughly getting 50mpg on a long journey.

build quality - no rattles and certainly hardly any noises from the road.

Performance - Much quicker 0-60 and pulls greater in 2nd gear.

Handling - in my mk2 punto throwing it round a roundabout made your hairs stand on end. however this seems like its on rails.

There are many Pro's, still cant find any con's.?

Hope that helps!!!

I loved my 1.4 Sporting until I test drove 1.9 Sporting, did'nt want to drive my "old" sporting again after that, the difference in every way is massive :slayer:

The diesel will wipe the floor with the 1.4 16v any day of the week for speed but for handling and fun i'd still rather have my starjet in the front opposed to a heavy diesel lump :p

starjet 10.9 on paper, mjet 9.2, tjet 8.6, id agree with matt and say im sure it is quite a bit quicker lol. i want one. ggrrr.

yeah with the GSR understandable. i cant wait for march when i renew insurance and get one myself!! got too many other things to pay for first though so any money burning things i want for my car are having to wait a good while. bummer.
