My standard head unit has broken in my GPS and I am looking to get a new alpine head unit. Have a few questions:

  • What fascia should I get?
  • How can I make the new head unit switch on and off with the ignition?(Put up with switching it on and off in my MK2 for sometime:rolleyes:)
  • Is it possible to make the steering controls work with the new head unit?
Thanks in advance:),

Hiya mate,

Just done the same :)

If the unit is single din, this is the fascia you want :) http://www.passionauto.co.uk/itemlist.html

Though it might be worth shopping around as I have seen them cheaper.

As for turning off with ignition, you have 2 options (that I know of):
1. Wire a cable from the HU to the igntion
2. If your HU has an ignition wire ready to be connected, you can scotch lock this onto any other electricals that come on with the ignition.

When I fitted mine I scotched locked onto the fan control power cable so that it comes on when the electrics/engine is on. Although you will not be able to run the fans and stereo simultaneously without the engine on due to current draw.

For the steering control, the HU will have to be steering control ready and if it is, although I havent seen it on the spec, you will need something like this:

That should be the correct ISO lead, however, I did not need one as the standard fitting was already ISO. Ensure you check before buying :)

Hope this helps

Sam
