i knew it wouldn't get anywhere near the book figures, they never do, :D

Yeh but it would be nice to think you could get somewhere near
The 1.3 MJ looks amazing on economy by "official" figures but they are complete Balls in real life

I here buy issue a Challenge that if anyone can ever get an officially verified economy figure close to 72mpg in the real world for a 1.3 MJ 90 then I will have a FIAT forum tattoo put on my arse and show it at every branch of Woolworth’s windows that i ever come accross

Too late, Woolworths has closed in whiterose shopping centre:D

yeah it would be nice to think that, but they test the car for about a mile at 2mph or something like that lol.

i can remember reading in a ford brochure that the urban figure was achieved by driving at 14mph for 2 mile in a constant gear without accelerating or going above the speed of 14mph! wtf???

mine does 99.9mpg if i dont use the go pedal!!!

lol... yeah, remember the fuel will be cut off from the engine on overrun... ;)

edit: (I do about 1000 miles a week) the car is getting better and better with miles.... up to 2,700 now, and I saw 51 mpg on a run today... dropping down to 47 with more varied driving.... it seems to be loosening up nicely ;) not used any oil either..

note: I'm not one of the believers in running in gently, I drive as normal from day 1.....

Sorry I can better that today. I drove from Milton Keynes (north Bucks) to Cirencester (Gloucestershire) with a driving attitude of "I have somewhere to be at 4pm" but without being silly about it and I got...

56.2 mpg!!!

Frankly I can't believe it myself. A mixture of being stuck behind lorries doing 50 mph, to some motorway/dual carriage way driving at 70 - 80 mph. The GP has now done 4,444 miles.

Basically, I noticed that long stretches of most speeds (where you could maintain that speed) gave very good results. It's all the stop/start or even slow down/accelerate back up that kills the mileage.

So I'm happy that I am now getting close to the "official" figure of 61mpg (which I'm sure I could have achieved without the traffic jams on the way back).

Whoo Hoo!

thats pretty good.... looks like it gets better and better as the miles pile on (y)

MPG Wars!!!! :D

The next thing you guys should experiment with is the accuracy of the trip computer, those things are known to be a little optimistic sometimes...

Yup, done that a couple of fill ups ago. Filled to the brim, worked it all out and guess what?

Trip computer gave me exactly the same mileage so I guess I can believe it. Kinda surprising though!

Hello again all,

Please recall I am routinely getting around 58mpg out of my 90bhp Dynamic by doing longer-than-average journeys and not slowing down for corners and roundabouts! My diesel consumption agrees favourably with what is indicated by the computer.

I think I read in an earlier forum discussion that a (breather?) filter can become blocked and that this can adversely affect the fuel economy. I wouldn't be happy at getting less than 50mpg. The car isn't exactly a rocket. Mind you, I owned a Mk I Punto GT (turbocharged petrol, 136bhp) for 5 years and nothing seems fast after that!

Mike

I find a brim to brim shows the trip computer to be about 2 mpg too optomistic but still have never seen high fifties ever and this is the only car i have ever owned that comes nowhere near the official claims

Although........ the car has just come back from it's first service and it is a totally different car much more responsive and the avaerage consumption is climbing by the mile!!!

I am begining to suspect that the service intervals are too long for the air filter on the MJ 90 and that this has been the cause of my ever increasing poor fuel consumption!

i managed 51mpg on the way to work today, which is 22 miles on B-road's. not bad i thinks. mind you, its about 38mpg on the way home
Downhill going to work, Uphill on the way back?

51mpg would be alright though if you could achieve it consistently in a 2007 56 1.4 16v Sporting Caribbean Orange. Why the large variation in your return journey - is there a cold beer waiting for you on your return? :yum:

Hi guys

Two weeks ago bought my Grande Punto 1.3 Multijet 90 5 door, its black metalic colour and i am happy with the car, it done 6000 so far, in 2 weeks time I have managed to cover 1000 miles. Anyway back to MPG, the best i got so far was 55 MPG but that was mainly motorway driving at 70-75 mph on 6th gear, today i did drive it around town for a bit and it droped to 53 mpg. I was hoping better fuel economy based on the Official figures. But then again i was thinking the other day the engine is only 1248cc and has 90BHP i think that is a good achievment.

Cheers

knocking about i am now getting 38mpg which i am pretty impressed with now. and although i seemed to have calmed down alot since the meggy has gone, i still like to use the in gear pace every now and then :)

My 1.9 seems to do about 50 mpg normally but have seen 58 and even a 60 on the computer but have only done about 1200 miles as only had the car 3 weeks. Comute is around 80 miles but when driving hard have had a 37!!(n) (n)

37 MPG is good when driving hard, imagine driving a 130hp petrol hard, you'd be lucky to get 30MPG so the 1.9 multijet is still economical compared to a petrol or other 1.9 diesels for that matter

Well i have decided that there is something wrong with my car. I have just come back from a 400 mile round trip, around 90% motorway driving, and my mpg figure according to the car was 44.6 and when i calculated it myself it worked out to be 46 (i brimmed it before going and then topped it up when i got back). I was expecting better than this. Am i being too optimistic?

The only one thing i did managed to gain from this is a little faith in the trip computer. I could not believe it was only about 1-1.5mpg out. I never trust it because it fluctuates so much but evidently its not that bad.

Btw i drive a 1.9 Sporting in case nobody notices it in my sig, lol.

At what speed were you travelling; was it constant or always slowing down/speeding up?

I've just had a tour of West Yorkshire and Cheshire (562 miles) and I got 49.1 but during the motorway stage of the journey (ie getting there) it was only about 46.9mpg. Travelling at a true 75-80 mph (according to TomTom which I trust much more than my speedo which under-reads the faster you go). I'm OK with this mileage and at these speeds.

So I guess it depends on the speed you travel at and at how constant a speed you travel too.
