Recently got a 1998 60S from ebay was said to be a runner but wouldn't start. I took it anyway as it was only £205.
What I have found so far alternator was seized solid, PO said new belt fitted (it was) I removed alternator - casing cracked so armature was jammed on stator, replacement on its way. Battery was knackered cell gone new one fitted. Plenty of spark from coils I think injector is working just for test I squirted fuel into throttle body no kick at all from engine but spat back a fair bit. I checked compressions bit low 120 lb/in2, engine done 127000 miles a fair mileage but not that much.
Where to go from here? any suggestions

I understand where your coming from & I had the option when I went to collect it. I checked ther car over & it is in excellent condition with a fair number of newish bits, shocks, belts, tyres, etc it had been laid up for 5-6 months. It show signs of fairly regular maintenance up to it being laid up, oil is recent (not black no mayonnaise) air filter clean.

Gone very quiet out there where are our fuel injection specialists? has anyone found a fault code reader that will connect to the diagnostic socket.
Or an adapter lead to connect the 16 pin plug type. (why hasn't a '98 Punto go a 16 pin socket my '96 VW has?) Fiat cheapskates, or not keeping up with technology!

I think you are right, I'll check the timing belt to make sure the mechanical timing is OK I'm wondering if the seized altenator & the PO's repair - replacing alt drive belt has disturbed something.
Out of interest will the ecu function properly without the alternator? I've got a replacement on the way .

Got the alternator yesterday very quick from ebaY dealer rickypuntos always found him cheap & quick for second hand parts also parts have been good no duff ones so far.

Got it going OK the cam timing was 80 degrees too advanced!!!!!!!! I can't even begin to answer why? oil light flickers at random speeds engine has no knocks or rattles - suspect pressure switch? I've had this happen before when diaphragm in switch leaks.

Fitted new rear exhaust complete rear 2 box system £50 from local stockist changed oil & filter oil? more like a mix of tar & treacle drainplug & filter needed gorilla tactics to remove. Also fitted new oil pressure switch & checked running gear all looks OK needs new RH handbrake cable not broken but outer sheath crumbling. I'll change that & I think it's ready for a MOT.
