Technical Glove box string

I was poking around looking for the airbag module (found it) and I say this string. pulled it, it snapped.

What is it actually for?

It comes off the back of the glovebox and has a connector that’s easily removed with a sprung button. If it’s just to stop the glovebox flapping down then it’s overly engineered for that hence why I thought it might do something-other than break.

I think the reason for it is to stop the glove box falling down and hitting you in the knees or dropping its contents on the floor if you open it a bit too vigorously.
