Hi, Has anyone managed to source and fit a new scuttle and engine cover for an X250 Ducato them selves? Is it an easy enough task? Mine is out of warranty and I don't want to give any more money to Fiat than I have to unless I can get one for free.

My van is in a (good) local garage for new glow plugs fitting which is adding up to stacks of cash thanks to the good old water problems. Despite the libral amounts of wax Fiat had put on the head, the garage had two glow plugs snap on them which they had forewarned me might happen for other reasons whilst trying to get the head off they spent a day trying to get the rusted injectors out and also had four more rusted bolts snap in the head. The garage owners words went along the lines of its a disgrace for a 3 year old van to be like this. So i am a little shy to rely on wax again and would prefer something a little more permenant as I was hoping to keep this van for a good few years yet.

Cheers

Tim

I would have thought sale of goods act would cover it.
It is an inherent fault, Fiat themselves have proved it, by offering the new cover. I'd be after a goodwill payment on the work caused by the water damage as well.
Phone call to Fiat uk, and follow up in writing.

If your paying for all that work to get done then surely a bit more for a cover is a sensible option especially if you intend to keep the van?

p.s. we all want things for free...maybe thats why theres such high unemployment?

Hi There - I have purchased the cover seperately from fiat and fitted it no problem - however I had to make up a small bracket for the gearbox end. It cost me about £26 quid +vat for it. Tried to claim one through Fiat but gave up in the end.

Thanks Scott, I got one off partsminer or some other website last week for £17 plus Vat from a garage down south with no use for it.

I fitted the cover with no hassels after the garage who had the van had spark erroded all of the siezed head bolts out of the head and the 2 glow plugs out and damaged all four injectors trying to free them. I dont know how much difference the cover actually makes apart from a little piece of mind (I just need to get hold of some more wax now to put around the injectors to make double sure). The biggest difference was sealing the scuttle to the widscreen with Sikaflex 221 mastic and sealing the join in the two scuttle halves which has all but eliminated any flow of water onto the head from the front of the van ( I had 1 spot of water on the cover and none under it after washing the van and testing the seal with buckets of water). What I don't understand (apart from the obvious extra cost) is why the factory didn't fit these as standard in the first as one of the mounting points is already there (so I am guessing that the cover had been standard on the Iveco van the engine was first used on)?
