sorry forgot to answer that;

i see your point but i was stating that most peoples attitudes are different, if someone is bein assaulted or the like then you are much more likely to get people helping, whereas someone on the phone in their car is different because you can not directly interfere if you see what i mean? then again i could be talking rubbish B)

No no, i see what you mean, but you can do your best to try to prevent it which is what I usually do. It's about how society views things too, up until a few years ago, using a mobile in the car was accepted as fair enough, maybe in 5 years time it will be as bad as a drink driver, maybe even less.

It's hard to understand how somebody on their mobile can cause death so easily, but it is possible, hence why I usually try to take action.

true, its like seatbelts, i still see alot of people who dont wear them, for me its instinct the second i put the key in the ignition i put my seatbelt on, in 5 years the phone will be as bad as the seatbelt is now (frowned upon so much kinda thing)

Fortunately, the 3pts in my car are two-fold winners.

1.Yu cant drive for more than a few mins without a pain in yure spine without them on, the buckle assembly cuts in nicely.

2.Chuck the phone to the opposite side of the car. Even with the harnesses on, yu couldnt move sufficiently to reach it! Even in the Cinq!:)

so Paul, before it was made illegal to use a mobile while driving, you would do the same?

There's a difference between trying to stop someone assaulting someone and a driver using a mobile phone while driving. Agreed, both are against the law but to be fair, if you're such a safe driver, you wouldn't be looking at what other people are doing in their cars while your on the road

Part of driving is watching what other people are doing, if you didn't, it would be much more difficult. That's one reason why high levels of tint are illegal. For example, if a guy behind me is very old, i might know to be a little easier on the brakes, if they are on the phone, they i know that they haven't a clue what they're doing and i have to be very careful. If somebody looks very young, I also have to beware that they may be a newly qualified driver etc. Knowing who is around you is part of being a safe (hence good) driver. Ask any decent driver and they will tell you that, ask the Advanced driver's union etc. and they will tell you the same.

Before it was made illegal, no, not unless they were causing me danger which was covered under other laws (driving without due care, not being in total control of a car etc. etc.) at which point I probably would have called the police instead because they would have done something, not just sat on the phone. However, it's now illegal so we/the police can be proactive, not wait until danger occurs.

Explain the difference? As I have said before, the later can be a lot more dangerous, those 4 girls will be scared by that dick head for the rest of their life, no one, and i mean NO ONE, has a right to use a phone whilst driving unless they have a handsfree (at which point it comes down to driving without due care etc.)

If people don't act to stop people who are risking other's lives because they think their mobile phone call is so important, that's bad, very bad.

it is not your responsability to stop people using mobile phones. You're not Captain Safe Driver! It's upto the police/DSA/government to do more about it! I seriously doubt that some lad flashing his lights while another driver uses a phone is not going to stop him from doing it.

stricter laws on drink driving and graphic adverts seriously helped against drunkeness behind the wheel. Why is this not the case with phones?!

It has definitely helped IMO - number of people has dropped to 5% of what it was.

It is all of our responsbilities to uphold the law, be it helping somebody in danger or stopping somebody from driving dangerous in whatever way you can. The day we stop being good citizens is the day the police stop coping...they need our help as much as we need them, be it in reporting crime or attempting to stop it.

they can't cope at the moment. If they could, we wouldn't need speed cameras to do their job

I wholeheartedly agree that we must all uphold the law but there are limits. Joe Public doesn't have the rights to punish someone speeding or using a mobile so we can't make a difference

Punishment is seperate, I am not up for vigilanty beatings for somebody using a phone, hence when I see it happening, I don't pull out my semi-auto and kill them ;)

It is up to us however to try and help prevent criminal acts, in whatever way possible, even if it doesn't work.

I too disagree - being a safe driver also means having a total perception of what is going on around you, and not just a "cricket pitch" field of vision. If these other drivers are going to infringe on me, then I will make sure I will manoveour accordingly!

A lot of road skills do depend on eye contact with other drivers. However, taking the law into your own hands can have serious consequences, as I found out when I had an ABH against me back in the early 90's. You learn fast!

That's only for people who cut me up/swear at me ;)

I just nipped up to the co-op 10 mins ago for some eggs and there was a guy in the left lane driving oddly, as if drunk, i was in the right lane and stuck back for obvious reasons. At the lights he was approx. 40cm into my lane, forcing me to be right at the edge of my lane. Guess what? Yes, on his nokia phone, no, not a young person but a 50 something. He was just sat there at the lights on his mobile. I didn't get his attention though and fortunately for the two of us he put it down. What if there had been a cyclist coming up, would he have then moved out the way to avoid the cyclist and then hit me? Probably. Being an average multi-tasker I know how difficult it can be to drive a car, avoid a cyclist, speak on the phone and still check the right mirror...

As I said, he was swerving as if drunk.

Honk, Headlights, flash repeatedly!! (Oh wait yuve already done that)

Works for me! Try driving up their arse and repeat the same. Loud exhausts can help (Drop clutch and floor throttle for max effect)
