I grew up watching George Best on the telly and always thought what a waste.
He had skill yes, but there were other gifted players at the time. Like all these footballers he threw it all away. Later Gazza and Maradonna would do the same.
GB was certainly overpaid by the wages of the time and blatantly over indulged himself. He went through years of being permanently pissed. He appeared on TV and radio drunk. It was toe cringing. As a previous post remarked he was a gifted footballer, but he was also a full time drunk, an alcoholic, a violent alcoholic when drunk and a wife beater.
He should be remembered for his football skill but in equal measure with pity and contempt for how he squandered his talent. He did have people around him, family and friends who wanted to help, who cared for him, who wanted him back in football, but he had a very destructive selfish streak and ultimately he broke their hearts.
As Parky said he took 15-20 years to commit suicide. He shouldn't have been given another liver when some one else more deserving could have benefitted.
He shouldn't be given any column space save the sports pages.
Alot more talented and generous people have died of genuinely debilitating and terminal illnesses but have received scant publicity.
GB in death as in life is selling newspapers.
