George Best - R.I.P

George Best - R.I.P

I grew up watching George Best on the telly and always thought what a waste.

He had skill yes, but there were other gifted players at the time. Like all these footballers he threw it all away. Later Gazza and Maradonna would do the same.

GB was certainly overpaid by the wages of the time and blatantly over indulged himself. He went through years of being permanently pissed. He appeared on TV and radio drunk. It was toe cringing. As a previous post remarked he was a gifted footballer, but he was also a full time drunk, an alcoholic, a violent alcoholic when drunk and a wife beater.

He should be remembered for his football skill but in equal measure with pity and contempt for how he squandered his talent. He did have people around him, family and friends who wanted to help, who cared for him, who wanted him back in football, but he had a very destructive selfish streak and ultimately he broke their hearts.

As Parky said he took 15-20 years to commit suicide. He shouldn't have been given another liver when some one else more deserving could have benefitted.

He shouldn't be given any column space save the sports pages.

Alot more talented and generous people have died of genuinely debilitating and terminal illnesses but have received scant publicity.

GB in death as in life is selling newspapers.

I lost my sister through liver disease. She never received a transplant. She was as deserving as any other. But none of us resented people like George getting his transplant. If George was your Dad, would you say "Dad, you don't deserve a new liver because you're a drunk and brought it on yourself"??

I don't think so.

And alcoholism isn't an illness ??

Alcoholism Is A Disease of the Brain, once you are cured one drink could send you back to how you were before, and unfortunatly that happened with george!

Bloody Brilliant !! :) :)

Fans at the Celtic and Wolves games today have shown a fantastic way to remember George Best. When the ref blew his whistle for the minutes silence, the fans & players all stood up and applauded for a whole minute, and the chant of "There's Only One Georgie Best" rang out across Molineux.

A wholly appropriate way to remember the great man :)

the Molineux tribute was perfect i thought.

the man was a haunted and troubled genious, if only he was english!

having never seen him play i can only know what he was like from old flaky footage but the way he ran with the ball was unbelevable, i can't think of a modern footballer who runs with the ball the way he did, 8inches away from his feet under perfect control at lightning pace.

"besty, besty, pass it, besty!, oi besty pass me the fkin ball, oi besty, BESTY!!!, pass it, pass it,fkin ell besty u ball greedy....Good goal besty, good goal"

one of the greatest quotes from another legend Bobby Charlton.

every football fan who was blessed with the pleasure of seeing him play live had a glimpse of a superstar, my grandad describes him as a ghost, "when he had the ball it is like the defenders couldent see him, he moved so quick and changed direction so fast that defenders only ever saw a blurr or a ghost whizz past them, he had everyone holding there breath as soon as he picked up the ball on the halfway line"

in all his interviews, in all his books he never once blamed anyone else for his drink other then himself, he was humble and had has said many times that he chose his lifestyle and he knew it would kill him but he had no real regrets only that he stoped playing too soon, he never regreted the booze he just regreted walking away from football so soon.

RIP Best...i will never forget your legacy and legend

well i agree with most ..that he HAD talent but wasted it! but he wasnt the best.there are plenty of better footballers than him, that actually lasted more than a couple of years. and yes he was an ******* for the way he abused his body! not many people would have got a chance and he had 2. i know people that have suffered with liver illness and why should he get the opportunity to waste what other people couldnt get? any all those people that say he'll be remembered for his football!!! LOL thats a joke, the modern era will remember him as a down and out alcholic and wife beater. and i dont give a FCUK what anybody says ...so you can flame away! George Best....yeah has been!

but i agree that the football community has shown lots of respect for the guy.maybe the next BEST wont go down the same road!!

I think that was one of the great things about him - he was talented but always himself.
Found some great quotes:
"I've stopped drinking, but only while I'm asleep."
"In 1969 I gave up women and alcohol - it was the worst 20 minutes of my life"
"I was in for 10 hours and had 40 pints - beating my previous record by 20 minutes." (following the blod transfusion after the liver transplant)
"I spent a lot of money on booze, birds and fast cars. The rest I just squandered"
Michael Parkinson: "What was the nearest to kick-off that you made love to a woman?"
Best: "Er... I think it was half-time actually"

Sorry ade, you're talking out of your arse !

Two great talents that fell by the wayside cause of the demon drink, Best and Gascoine, but somehow, for me anyway, Best never complained about his life, whereas Gazza always seemd to whing and try to blame others. Best came to football as a young lad and his sheer talent made him a legend on the pitch ( I have seen him play) and his good looks made him a legend off the pitch. Even with his talent though, football can be hard, and I saw him hacked down on many occasions by footballers who couldnt beat him otherwise, and if he finally got tempted by the fleshpots of london and the wine women and song, who can blame him? Just wish someone would tempt me:)

As for being a wife beater, well, that slag of a wife of his who made stacks of money by kissing and telling and who always says she will change her name but never does, simply because the ONLY thing she is famous for is being Mrs Best, well she desereved all she got.

Just like Ali who is now just a shadow of his fomer self, we all got used to seeing Besty in hospitial or falling out of a pub drunk, but I can remember his glory days, just like I can recall the glory days of Ali......and thats how I prefer to remember them. Best lived his whole life in the spotlight, I wouldnt like to have to do the same

Have to say tho', I bet George is pissed off he missed out on all night pubs !! LOL

Yea, poor old George dying on this day....Carlsberg dont do irony, but if they did, it would be the best irony in the world

What a load of bo*****s, how mean can some people get !! Of course he deserved a new liver, he did more for society and contributed more to it than most if not all of the people on this forum.
His generosity was legendary and he did lots of charity work, in any case we all hear of fat lardy arse people who have never worked, drawing benefit and every state handout going, riding round in mobility cars, having downstairs shower rooms fitted by social services etc etc, and all because they can't be bothered with the right diet and exercise. No ! leave George alone, at least it gave him a few more years and God knows, he deserved that.

Alot of people don't realise that George was the first superstar footballer, who (I think) earned his first cap the year after becoming professional footballer at the age of 16 or 17 and from then out, just went on to be the legend he is. Footballers these day, with the acception of a few, don't reach any kind of superstardom until they are at least 20.

The superstar lifestyle was unheared of before George so there's no wonder how it all came over him like it did. I know if I went to night clubs and bars and was offered free drink all night and all the fanny I wanted, I would have taken advantage, professional footballer or not!!

In my view, if you become a legend, then you can say a bad word against him but until then....

Chris
