I read that GM were going to take over Fiat Auto in an old post on another site, did that happen, is it going to happen or was it dropped?

I read an article about that in a magazine a while back. I sincerely hope it never happenns, as GM will turn FIAT into just another mass-producer of boring, soulless, s**tty cars (Vauxhall, anyone?).

The only guy I know who would like that to happen is rriggsy, he loves Vauxhalls so much he sold his Stilo Abarth only to replace it with a Vauxhall Vectra.

GM have 20% of Fiat auto and as for now due to what Fiat done to restructure the company to thus help fiat auto meant that GM feel the put option to buy up the rest of the company is in dispute and void. although GM and Fiat are aiming to resolve this so its a game of wait and see now.

Anyway, anyone seen the new Astra, seems to share a few lines with the Stilo.

Well I don't know if it would be such a bad thing. The new 1.3 Multijet diesel engine was co-developed by Fiat and GM. The 2005 Punto will share a chassis with the next Corsa. There are other moves between the companies as well to co-operate.

Just because cars share the same parts like a chassis doesn't mean they will look or even handle the same. If GM can help Fiat to stay around then it's a good thing.

Fiat can retain their styling department, tuning characteristics, etc. It's all about money.

If GM and FIAT are really in bed with each other what about the next FIAT Coupe being derived from the Pontiac GTO/Holden Monaro They are trying to get as much use as they can from the platform according to a friend of mine at HSV in Oz! I think we should start a campaign! A new LS1 V8 powered Italian designed coupe would be a great move for FIAT! Maybe Vauxhall wouldn't be too happy, but who cares......

Fiat and GM had become partners a few years ago. GM have a stake of 20% in Fiat's Auto division and Fiat have a 5% stake in GM. They agreed on a put-option that meant Fiat if wanted could sell the remaining 80% and GM could only say YES. However due to a turnaround of Fiat improving cars, and the fact that Fiat would like it to be an Italian company, Fiat and GM have been disputing on how long the put-option should last. However Fiat don't intend to be acquired by GM.
Hope this helps anyone.[8D]

Its a bad thing, take Nissan and Renault! The new Micra is built on the next Clios floorpan, using the clios suspension, gearboxes are renault, diesels engines are renault, electrical and interior items are sourced from the EU using many french firms. The result is the most unreliable Nissan ever! I know, I had one. If GM get to take all of Fiat over you can be sure the fire engine would be first to go and replaced with those awful GM 4 cylinder things. I hope it never happens. As for SAAB, I remember when they had character:(they are just a posh Vectra now|)

ITALY: Fiat head sees auto alliances expanding beyond GM
19 Feb 2004

Fiat sees General Motors as a privileged partner, but the Italian car maker also sees itself in alliances with other companies, Fiat chief executive Giuseppe Morchio was quoted as saying in an Italian newspaper.

"We are thinking of a structure of alliances for Fiat that I would define as star-like," Morchio reportedly told Il Secolo XIX.

"GM is a privileged partner, but we also have other collaborations, for example with PSA (Peugeot Citroen), with Audi for Maserati," he said, according to Reuters.

The report noted that GM acquired 20% of Fiat's car arm, Fiat Auto, in a 2000 deal, and the two companies have also developed strong industrial partnerships. But they have recently argued over the validity of a put option, which would allow the Italian company to sell the rest of Fiat Auto to GM from next year.

Asked if the "industrial marriage" of Fiat and GM would work, Morchio reportedly said he did not see the relationship as a marriage.

"Marriage constitutes an exclusive relationship, while in the auto industry you need to have an open attitude to diverse operations," he told the newspaper.

Reuters said that, under its new chief executive, Herbert Demel, Fiat Auto is undergoing a restructuring to improve its competitiveness after a drop in sales led to a crisis two years ago.

At a management meeting at the carmaker's headquarters in Turin on Tuesday, Demel unveiled a plan that includes the creation of a division to oversee a commercial network and long-term strategy for Europe, the report said.

Morchio told Il Secolo that he was sticking to a net profit target at group level in 2005 and at the auto unit in 2006.

"We believe that we can reach this line even in light of the results of the last 12 months, which will again show a loss but give a sense of improvement," he reportedly said.

Car registrations were seen rising by 1% in Europe in 2004 but dropping by 1% in Italy, but Fiat expected to be able to increase its revenues with the sale of new models such as the Panda, he said.

Morchio said Fiat's productivity drive had already saved it one billion euros in one year, Reuters noted.

They should do but, people in this country cant see past the blue oval badge and the what ever the vauxhall badge is. fiat could make the greatest car in the world, get amazing ratings in europe, get average or just above avaerage reviews in britain and the british public will not purchase it because, to them, it does not have the right badge.
