Hi,
I have a problem with the gearbox installed in the motorhome. When driving, there is a crashing sound whenever I go to lower gear. I understand that this problem could be caused by bad synchro rings. Could these be bought considering the age of the gearbox?
So I therefore trying to understand what type gearbox is installed.
As I can't find type info on the gearbox (yet), I was searching in ePer with the VIN. The OE code that came up for the gearbox is 9566526980.
Is it possible to translate that OE code to a gearbox "common name" or type, e.g. 20LE01 or ML5TU?

You're not alone in having gearbox issues, its very common, normal even with high mileage.

A lot of times the gearboxes aren't available to buy secondhand and there's no new ones available. So you'd need the gearbox reconditioned, it will be very expensive and take a couple of weeks. You'd need to take it to a Fiat professional garage that specialises in this kind of work.

Hello

It cursory search online shows there may be several variations for the same transmission.
What I could find was these: 20KE01/20KE02/20KE21/20KE22

The first two appear to relate to the final drive ratio

I’ve rebuilt a few gearboxes in my time. Time consuming and costs can spiral out of control once stripped down and finding other worn components etc - would it be more effective to send yours in for rebuild to a transmission specialist?
Another route you could go down would be via an online supplier for an exchange gearbox. You are showing in 🇸🇪 ? I could not locate one there but here’s one such example in Strasbourg, France 🇫🇷 Click here

Hi,
thanks very much for your answers, much appreciated.

I didn't realize that there are several possible gearboxes with the same OE number, very good information.
Well, I will need find the type identification on the actual gearbox, engraved or with similar marking. It's a sunny day in Sweden today so will try to do this today.

And yes, I have considered an exchange gearbox as you suggested. I have already received a tender from a Swedish company, cost is 3000€ for an exchange.

I must confess, work by myself on replacing e.g. the synchro rings for the gears 2-5, sounds very tempting. I have lot of time during this winter and the cost will be, hopefully, much lower than a professional repair. There are some videos out there showing ways to repair gearboxes, especially one very informative made by Rich Maxwell,

My biggest concern right now is to find the actual identification on the gearbox and of course to see if the are synchro rings available on the market at all.

I realize that I could be too optimistic about this, but I will need to give it a go.:)

The markings look like this image

which I found on this Italian breakers website Click Here
Sadly it doesn’t assist in exactly you might locate the markings, but at least you know there are some.

great, thanks a lot.

I lifted and removed left wheel, but I didn't found any text underneath and on the sides of the gearbox or the differential. There is a metal tag on the top saying PA 1687 31/08/16 and a sort of inscription on the gearbox near the clutch arm saying Ti 07756-211. So I found something but not a good clue :) as I see it.

I will continue the detective work from the top, removing the hose to the turbo etc. for a better view.

Thanks again.
