Just wondering what price range a recon would cost on a Mk1 box or whether its simply not worth it. Ive done some looking around and get the distinct feeling the average cost to clean and refurb a gearbox is £500 plus the VAT.....that excludes removing it and refitting.

Ive sourced a cheap 2nd hand punto gearbox as I had lost reverse with my old box so at least I am mobile again now and there is no rush to sort another box now until Spring.

the new box is quiet nice. the throw is very short and the gate is tight too. its covered 88,000 miles which is low for a Mk1. However she whines a fair old bit in 4th and 5th which my old box with the broken reverse never did or it was certainly quieter than this one so I was thinking of getting my old box looked at and refurbed.

Is it even worth paying to have an old box reconned ? its done 139,500 miles.
the throw was long and the gate was sloppy. some have suggested the box was past its best at that mileage.

Ive tried to find a brand new box from Partsworld (Fiat) but cant seem to source one. at least it would come with a guarantee but Id be looking at around £600 probably.

short of driving the actual car that a donor gearbox comes out of, 2nd hand buys are a real gamble.......its just a shame the new box has that whine but is otherwise fine.

I have also read that sometimes a gearbox is never quite the same after being repaired and that new gears working with old gears can end up making more noise than before due to the different wear rates of the two metals.

if you have had a refurb done on your box, where did you take it, what was the cost and were you happy?

I would change the oil in the "new" gearbox. The whine may simply be the differential, but the boxes like a fully syntheic gearbox oil -- the stuff FIAT sells is a decent price and you won't need more than a couple of litres.

Any of the 5 speed C.514 boxes should fit if you swap out the speedo drive, selector box top and cups.

So, Cinq and Sei Sporting right up to Idea.

2.46 litres is the precise volume given in the haynes if my memory serves me correctly, i know my memory is famously bad but it did swap a gearbox and renew the oil not long ago ;)

But it's wrong. A search here will establish as much.

All the sources give the same figure -- all are wrong -- so the blame lies with FIAT. No one has ever managed to get more than 2 litres in.

this might help.

yeah might be 1.7 litres for some models but on mine the manual states 2 litres or more precisely till it comes out of the fill hole when the car is level :)

its not the diff. when i coast clutch dipped the noise goes. so its the box not the diff.

i dont think a change of oil will sort this out. its had new Castrol Syntrans 75w/90 oil.
i suspect main shaft bearings now.

thinking maybe i can buy a rebuild kit and fix my old box up?

as far as i know, the bearing sizes you need aren't referenced any where but if you are able to find out what you need no reason you can't do it yourself. Seen as magical boxes not to be opened by most people but they are at the end of the day just cogs in a box lol. Not something i ever done but i would have a crack, whats the worst that could happen afterall.

Did you have a new clutch at the time of the swap? Thrust bearings are well known for being noisy. I have a new one in the cabby that whines after only 60miles but goes silent after dropping the clutch.

I believe the gearbox from a mk2 will fit a mk1 and also the bravo/brava 1.2 16v ones as well. Might need to check on ratios though.
