Just wondering what price range a recon would cost on a Mk1 box or whether its simply not worth it. Ive done some looking around and get the distinct feeling the average cost to clean and refurb a gearbox is £500 plus the VAT.....that excludes removing it and refitting.
Ive sourced a cheap 2nd hand punto gearbox as I had lost reverse with my old box so at least I am mobile again now and there is no rush to sort another box now until Spring.
the new box is quiet nice. the throw is very short and the gate is tight too. its covered 88,000 miles which is low for a Mk1. However she whines a fair old bit in 4th and 5th which my old box with the broken reverse never did or it was certainly quieter than this one so I was thinking of getting my old box looked at and refurbed.
Is it even worth paying to have an old box reconned ? its done 139,500 miles.
the throw was long and the gate was sloppy. some have suggested the box was past its best at that mileage.
Ive tried to find a brand new box from Partsworld (Fiat) but cant seem to source one. at least it would come with a guarantee but Id be looking at around £600 probably.
short of driving the actual car that a donor gearbox comes out of, 2nd hand buys are a real gamble.......its just a shame the new box has that whine but is otherwise fine.
I have also read that sometimes a gearbox is never quite the same after being repaired and that new gears working with old gears can end up making more noise than before due to the different wear rates of the two metals.
if you have had a refurb done on your box, where did you take it, what was the cost and were you happy?
