Hey, Got a problem with my gearbox. Occasionaly when I downshift (usually 5th - 3rd or 3rd - 2nd) I get a grinding noise and the gear won't go fully home without a bit of force.. I'm Guessing the gear selector is little out of line?

Any help at all would be greatly appreciated.

to proove its not the syncros, try this (old bus brivers technique)
when wanting to change down via block (5-3 etc) push the clutch down and select neutral, then let the clutch back up in neutral, then re apply the clutch and select the gear, if there is no crunch then your probo looking at the syncro. repeat this a few times to be sure.
this is called double declutching - i was taught it when we had to drive with old style gearboxs and crash boxes many moons ago when i was a bus / coach driver.
if your still having problems then it could be you have a cable out of alignment or the selector could be worn, im not sure if or how you can adjust them.

so doubling the clutch made no difference, then i would look at the selector, i would first think about changing the oil and lubricating the selector on top of the box, but i peronally think this may not make much difference... but an oil change may..
also is your clutch very light or very heavy?, if its very heavy it could be worn out and need changing which could also give these problems,
i dont think the cables are adjustable - would someone else be able to comferm this. also what engine do you have?
but i think your correct, it may work out expensive unless your willing to get your hands very dirty...
there is a special alum bolt on the bottom of the gearbox, the same size as the sump plug on the engine so its a good investment getting on. drain the oil out and then fill the oil in the same hole. (you will need to put the car back onto a flat surface to drain all the old oil then jack it back up to fill again) you will need a bottle with a filler pipe on (the type that pulls out of the inside of the bottles usually the 1litre bottles have these on), you will also need if memory serves approx 2 litres. fill through that hole until oil starts to come out.
i will carry on scratching my head,

roy
