Morning all

I have a problem and unable to find out where the Gearbox oil is leaking from, it's either the hose(s) to the cooling box or the cooling box? (I THINK!)

Due to the oil leak, oil is everywhere under the nearside wheel arch area and along front egde by rad, so finding the leak is dam near impossible.

the oil is red - Auto gearbox fluid or PAS fluid!

Anyone have any ideas, would be much appreciated, thanks.

wait a minute, near-side is opposite side to gearbox on all models isn't it.... So i'm doubtful its going to be gearbox oil. Does it change gear smoothly still?

Most mk1s have electric power steering too, but GT does have hydraulic and if it were leaking is on that side of the car.

Hi it's a V reg Selecta 1.2 8v Mk1 punto which is autobox (CVT) which is on the nearside, there are two hoses to a small rad on the nearside next to the main rad it's about 12" high and 6" wide and 3" deep, the hoses come from the autobox to the small rad, I've looked online but unable to get a pic, so will have to take one this evening and post here.

In section 10 of the hanes manual the picture sort of shows the hose ans rad.

I believe it is the oil cooler for the auto box.

The unions on those pipes where they go from the metal to rubber hose are known for weeping.

Best method is to thoroughly clean the affected area first and try and trace the source of the leak.

i'm still confused.. the only pic in that first link of an engine i can see is a GT engine and you can see the IC with the oil cooler mounted on back (they are also on offside). And the gearbox has to be on the offside for it to be attached to a FIRE engine... All i can see in the scan is something about a heat exchanger above the gearbox, doesn't seem to mention a cooling circuit at all (section 10 is also looking under offside arch).

Sorry, its not that i don't believe you or anything, i clearly have not ever seen one with your exact spec engine before, i'm not being much help but i'm intrigued now.

No matter which side though, J.R. is right, clean it all up the best you can then try find the leak, should be much much more obvious then. And i would love to see some pics, just general pics of the setup, just cause i'm nosey

Thanks JR Racing I will do that.

blu73, I think i'm right in saying that the offside is the drivers side and the nearside is the side near the curb, the pic 10.4a is the side near the curb, under the bonnet looking from front, the engine is mounted to the left and the auto box is to the right the hoses and oil cooler is to the right under the battery tray and next to the rad filler cap.

Please correct me if I am wrong!

Pics will be on way, when I look at it this weekend (y)

had a look, it has been from the clip and end of pipe, i think, not the unions hopefully!
Cut a small piece off the hose and re-attached, we'll wait and see!

Hi, no the pipe has a bullet end then goes in along about an inch then out again, the out again is the bit shown. still look at another pic some where and the oil cooler is not the same the other pic has UJ's at the cooler as well as the autobox, but mine has only UJ's at the autobox, the other end it is a push on pipe fit and jubilee clip. :bang:

Well here the undate:

After finding the correct hose and clips, have now replaced the rubber hoses, looks like it has stopped the problem, so it was the hoses.

all done in 10 mins, happy now, even after having a flat.

also be aware, EAS or CAF charged me 21GBP for two hoses, where Halford the same with auto gearbox oil 11 GBP, THINKING HALFORDS WOULD BE MORE EXPENSIVE!
