General Gearbox mount

Hi, not posted on here for a while but am in need of a bit of help.

Firstly; on Saturday there was vibration coming from under the car, if you have a multijet with forge braces on you will know what I mean!

Monday: car goes to fiat dealer where they bend the brace out of the way of the gear box linkage/exhaust

Tuesday night: gear box mount shears, pulls drive shaft out. Winner! Coincidental?? This happened after going over a sleepy policeman at about 25 as there was quite a bit of traffic around. Original noise came from doing a u turn and accelerating out of it with full lock on.

I haven't whacked it etc, it's too far back to gave been whacked on a kern etc.

The best bit is that the car is 24 days out of it's 3rd year warranty so I was going someone with a bit more knowledge would be able to shed any light and help me out??

Sorry if it's a bit scattered, I have just done a 12hr night shift and am about to go to bed. I am eagerly awaiting replies when I wake up

I feel bad for you dude, That mount you talk about was replaced on my car but never failed in the same extreme way as yours.

On the other hand dude. "doing a u turn and accelerating out of it with full lock on. "..........thats never a good idea whether it be car or boat, just bad practice man put so much strain on everything.

Why? If it needed that because of traffic why not wait? Or U - turn somewhere else... or just turn in a way other than a U turn?

Its out of warranty & you had a non-standard part that was causing a vibration (for how many months?) & doing some dodgy U turns....get your cheque book out i'm afraid.

Is it likely these Forge braces prevent engine / box flex and transmit that movement into other parts that were not designed for such energy?

I suppose I'll get stick from Forge Reps on here but the question needs answering TBH.

Or was it the U-turn mayhem?

Very good point FFoxy, energy cant be created or detroyed only changed, if I remember my school days correctly:chin:. Therefore all the energy that went into play and roll which it now cant must end up somewhere else and tbh a mount sounds very likely. This combined with putting your foot down at full lock (i.e. maximum possible strain) has no doubt caused the failure. Sorry to say dude but if I can figure that out Fiat can too.

Personally I cant see how the Forge braces would have any effect on the mount. The braces are for stopping the twisting in the body and through the crossbeam. The mount is to dampen the flex from the engine which is in a completely different direction to the braces. Its a worn out mount.. simples! I'm guessing yours is remapped? If so then it'll be the increased torque which will have done the damage. Its a hell of a lot of torque for a small hatchback! Its similar torque output to an old yank V8 lump.:devil:

Unfortunately as far as warranty goes.. Its out of date. Thats it. Doesn't matter if its 1,2 or 50 days..

The forge braces have nothing to do with it. It was a case of put them on, start it, that doesn't sound right, take them off again. On for no longer than I could get myself back under the car.

With the whole accelerating thing, it was a busy road, but you gotta get moving somehow haven't you, don't presume I yanked it round and kicked it's arse.

Anyway, 3 mounts and a drive shaft later it should be getting fixed with any luck

Oh I agree.. Some people are far too quick to presume!

Can only presume then that it was just a knackered mount..

Or all the wheel spinning you were obviously doing!!

Not the 'clearest' of opening threads....still dont know if were talking side mount (under battery) or rear gearbox mount.

I assume rear as it happened going over a speed bump?

Having re-read it it couldve been a bit clearer, I could hardly keep my eyes open but didn't want to go to bed!

I'm not sure, all I have been told is that one of the mounts has broken, then when the box dropped it has taken the other two mounts with it. Which I'm guessing has then pulled the drive shaft out??

No... there is a reason and its not a map as he doesnt have one, I do however and 56,600 miles on no issues like it. Its use, torsional strain maybe, unlikely to be all 3 mouts faulty IMO.

I'm not being judgemental, its the OP's car to use as he see's fit, just trying to help get at root cause. ANY change from standard can change how a car reacts handling wise as well as faults wise.
