Have rebuilt the engine and checked over the gearbox - it looked ok. Have bolted the gearbox back onto the crankcase and turned it over with the starter motor. All good so far….. but…. I can’t get the front part of the gearbox casing back on - it leaves about 5 mm gap all round. Investigation shows the bearing ‘into’ the diff casing is sitting proud - see the photo below, likewise the bearing on the other end of the same shaft.
I’m no gearbox expert (too complicated for me!) but I just can’t figure out how to correct this. I’m hoping the collective expertise and brilliance of the gathered throng might be able to help.
I have tried gentle taps with a rubber mallet and various configurations with different gears selected but no change.
Here’s hoping and my thanks in advance.

The flat on the flange of the rear bearing should be facing down otherwise it will not go home
