my friend has a fiat punto sport 2000 model with an automatic continuously variable transmission, a few days ago I moved the gear stick from park into drive then back into park when the car was parked and the engine turned off.

The car offerd NO resistance, it just slipped in and out again. I was not forceful, but for some reason he thinks doing that has damaged the car.

It has had a history of problems with the gearbox, when ge got it, it wouldnt go in reverse, later it turned out that there was some plastic in the selector or gearbox, I cant remeber what part that stopped it moving, and it was taken out and now it was able to be put in reverse again, however it failed its MOT because its gearbox had somthing wrong with it, so he had it replaced.

After it was replaced it seemed fine, but now its acting up again. It somtimes gets jammed in park and it my friend has to take the cover off around the gearstick inside the car and manually take it out of park via the seletor or whatever its called then put it back together.

can I have cause this much damage? surely if moving the gearstick out of park when it wasnt running could cause damage, why isnt there a safty feature that PREVENTS it doing that? That doesnt make much sense to me.

Btw I forgot to mention, his battery is screwd and has been for a while. I am thinking that might have somthing to do with it, because CVT gearboxes have an electronic interlock, which prevents the gear selector lever being moved from P until the ignition is turned on. I was able to move it when it was parked, and somtimes it doesnt move from park at all. Maybe they are all connected.
