So....i finally found a decent priced gearbox for my 1.2 - my bf who is aqualified mechanic fitted it..he then realised the drive shaft needed replacing..so he replaced that...

NOW...theres something wrong with the engine...he tried bringing it up to bite to make it move - but it wont move...engine sounds fine tho...so i'm puzzled...

our mate from the local fiat breakers came and had a look and said that its a common fault for the engine to have this problem after the gearbox goes on this age car - but my car is only a 51plate??!...

was wondering if anyone had experienced similar problems??...

if that is a common problem then im the POPE im afraid... :(

ive had a silly amount of box changes and not once have i had that problem.

whats the problem exactly? the engine is running fine, just the clutch wont engage?

Engine would not go wrong after gearbox change. Something has been fitted incorrectly.

Your boyfriend is obviously a thick **** and didn't fit the driveshaft properly.

lol..he wont appreciate being called athick ****...but it really did surprise me when he and the local fiat breaker bloke said that im better off getting rid of it!...

i explained that ppl on here have changed their gearboxes and had no probs..mind you he did say that seeing as the box was new(ish) as my car is only 5years old it ws surprising how much damage was done...

he said he suspects that one of the bolts came off the gearbox..then went through the driveshaft..therefore messing up the engine...

but i REALLY dont want to get rid of it!..any suggestions on what i should do next pls?

perhaps i should take it to a garage for a diagnostics check??

HELP!!! :D

Hi this is Princess Z's Boyfriend,

Basicly the problem is as follows:

The engine does not sound fine at all...The gearbox has been fitted properly and checked.

The driveshaft was fine. The guy at the fiat breakers said it sounds like the problem is where the driveshafts go into the engine..I have never heard nor seen this problem before...I have also never done a Fiat gearbox before..However, I have done numerous other cars and never seen this.

I was very shoked by the state of the inside of the gearbox, apart from that the car mechanicly is perfect.

Has anyone experienced this or heard of it...?

And if you are gonna slate me 'mr anonymous' leave your name so I can defend myself..Idiot!

Just a stab in the dark here, but could these problems be caused by the rather unorthodox engine mods(re-boring, etc) causing undue stress on components that weren't designed to handle that kind of change ?

Apologies if I'm about to sound condescending, but:

The flywheel must be turning, otherwise the engine wouldn't start off the starter.
So, to lose drive between the crank and wheels you've either stripped the splines out of the end of the crank when the original gearbox has failed (never seen it happen before), the clutch is permanently disengaged somehow, or the replacement gearbox is scrap.

I have once had a replacement gearbox jammed in both first and third at the same time (admittedly on a Vauxhall) - I presume the linkages were rather badly knocked either in the accident which binned the car or the scrapyard's efforts to rip the box from the vehicle.
Bit of a long shot, but it could possibly have had a selector forced past it's normal range and either broken or become detached internally.

That was my thoughts exactly...not seeming right to me...gonna take it all apart see whats goin on...

The mods are not as extreme as they sound...just adding a little power...I understand what you mean but not sure I agree.

Ignore the part about the splines, brain in neutral. The splines are on the gearbag input shaft and the clutch friction plate...

i have pulled lots of bravos to bits and i will tell you now if the engine was fine b4 the new box went on then the problem is the new box.

1.2's dont have the strongest boxes in the world and they are pretty proned to breaking if driven hard as wimmy and andy sx will tell you.

chances are that its a duff box because there are alot about in breakers

what parts did you change when it was all out, did u do things like the clutch??? also the housing plate on the 1.2 has a tendancy to catch on the fly wheel if not in the exact correct positon which makes a rather interesting noise.

all i can say is think yourself lucky because im currently rebuilding a mk2 1.6 engine and its electronics to run on a mk1 1.6 ecu, inlet manifold and gear box set up! now thats quite interesting :) will teach me not to drive it hard and throw pistons lol.

anyway any questions just post and i will try and give u the best of what i know lol.

i may not reply 2mo as i will be working on the engine all day but i will try to check around lunch time.

good luck stick with it ur get thtere in the end :)

Anything With Tits or Wheels Will Cost You MONEY!!

as ash said the boxes arent the strongest in the world on the 1.2. i have changed enough to know the usual problem (deff for me specifically on this one) is the differential unit. when this goes it can go in a number of different fashions, but my fave by far has to be the major hissiy fit and chucking a cog through both walls of the bell housing... :)

the problem could be the diff, its easy enough to strip off the car with the box attached, just wip off the rear mount (attaches to the box) and you can get to it. ive had them go where there was no drive.. intermittant drive, drives fine then all of a sudden looses drive to one wheel and regains it again... and al of theses make a horendous knocking banging noise.

did you have to strip the diff at all to swap driveshaft couplings?

and as ash said again.. the mk1 / mk2 1.6 tinkering is a ball ache... but were getting there

hth guys, any more info you need gimme a shout.. you can catch me on msn aswell if you want?

hopefully going to collect it later :) ...but rik is going to carry on taking my current bravo apart in order to find the problem!

I just hope i can get my current one back on the road..keep fingers and toes crossed i guess!Im sure theres some explanation for whats happened and i know it will get fixed..i refuse to let it die! :)

I'm liking that colour of the 1.4 :)

If you look after it, the 1.4 engine will be fine.

haha, please no, not a 1.4, looks like your seriously into modding, go for a 1.6, with some work it'll be gorgeous, the 1.4 will always be... well a 1.4! :(
