Hi all,

My gear shifter return spring seems to have broken today. Whilst all gears seem OK the stick will not return to centre when in neutral and its not as natural to change between gears, I really have to concentrate (for example I keep going from 2nd to either 1st or 5th instead of 3rd).

I assume its still OK to drive - any thoughts on whether this is a common issue please or whether my Fiat extended warranty will cover it, or costings if not. I did give her a thorough wash yesterday, but not sure this could have caused it (and it was fine on the 40 mile trip to work, just not on the way back).

Thanks all.

first time I hear about it on the bravo, but in a prevous car, my spring was missing and it was really easy to replace with a random spring that I found in my house.

I had the same problem on a Punto, however my Bravo had these symptoms at Christmas and it was water in the gear linkages again..... basically rusted up.

Thanks for the replies both.

Noticed that this felt considerably better, nay fine on the way to work this morning (a good 40 mile trip). Felt OK on the return leg too although I was starting to stiffen up by the time I got back. Will need to keep an eye on this one.

If its getting better I suspect its corroded linkages, mine did the same.

About to call Fiat about it, they have been changed twice in 2 and a half years and if they are doing nothing about getting a permanent fix they can continue to change them even when its out of warranty.

In this day and age water should not be getting into linkages!

im i right in thinking this is down to a superbly poor GM design....or is it just another Fiat thing?

Tranny is all GM ain't it? Mines been fine the last couple days.

hi all,
mine 08 plate (uk) 1.6d eco does the same issue...
