Rasputin's new clutch and slave cylinder have arrived ahead of me changing the clutch during August, when The Younger Mrs S. isn't using it.

I've had a look at gear oil. There seems to be 1.6 litres of it, which sounds about right.. but the standard spec', oil according to the handbook, is Petronas/Tutela Trans Technyx in 75W85 flavour, which is quite an unusual weight. It looks as though apart from Petronas/Tutela, hardly anyone else makes it.

Since there's millions of 500 1.2's out there, never mind Pandas, Puntos and the like that use the same transmission, why is it apparently so unusual?

What do people use in their 1.2's if (as I presume) not 75W85?

Mannol do a semi-synthetic 75W85 GL4, which apart from the lack of Fiat 955550-MX3 spec specifically listed, would seem to be in the ball-park?

This could be the right one at least that's what Castrol reckons for our car

I used this in my tipo
It's a 75-80w so not 100% right but within the original range and compatible with both gl4 and gl5

Thanks for the replies.. it confirmed I'm not missing something obvious... 😅

I found some of the text-book correct Petronas/Tutela Trans Technyx 75W85 albeit at £16 a litre delivered, which is twice as expensive as the non text-book options... but there's only 1.6 litres in there and I won't have to change it again for about 5 years (cue a driveshaft etc. will fail now.. 😨 ) so not a complete disaster.

Is there a service interval for the gearbox oil

The documentation I've got with the car doesn't have a User manual.. just a Quick Reference that doesn't go into too much detail.... so I'll have a look through my other cars' documents instead, to get a feel for it.

In the past, I've had cars whose service interval for the gearbox was either 60k or 72k and/or 5 and 6 years respectively. I don't think gearbox oil is *critical*.

On the other hand, Rasputin is 9 years old now and I have no idea if/when the gear oil was ever changed... but in any case, if I replace the clutch, the gearbox will have to be drained to get the driveshafts out, so I'll need to replace it for that reason alone. Maybe "with the clutch" is the de-facto replacement interval..?

Not on many cars. If you are cynical like me, you'd think "sealed for life" means they'd prefer the car to destroy itself, meaning you have to buy a new one.
You won't buy their new electric cars if your old petrol one is running well;)
My concern is with so many faults today electric related, are the EVs going to be be any better?

Electrics seem to be one of the better Fiat features, probably because it can’t rust.

You’ll probably find EVs have about 90% same systems as current petrol cars, the drive system isn’t that big to the overall complexity.

Is it a petrol? Water pump should be done with timing belt typically.

I’d leave the clutch until it needed one.
Yes, when I had the timing belt changed at the Fiat dealer that was really cheap ( £215 ) I wrongly assumed the pump would be replaced only on collection did I find out it wasn't, but its now due again for the belt so when I can afford it both will get done

Really?? I phoned Fiat to ask the price of the timing belt kit and water pump and that alone was more tha £215. Local motor factor had the Gates one for £95
