my 1.9 8v croma has developed a interesting problem on idle its a strange metallic rattling from what i think is the gear box.

has any one else had any thing like this?

also the gearbox in the car was reconditioned about 2000miles ago.

any ideas appreciated.

Hello Nick- If you had the gearbox "done" only 2000mls ago there would have been quite a few things to take off and replace to get the box out of the car. Something could have worked loose and be catching on something else:eek:. lots of screws on cars are "loctited" in so they dont vibrate loose, if they were not "re - loctited" when put back in then its not beyond common sense to think this might be your cause.
I have a very annoying rattle on the right hand side behind the dash, but I know what it is and cannot sort it:mad:, I put a new linkage on the wipers and when I had done it I was putting the sockets back in their places in the little box when one was missing:confused:. It must have dropped down the back of something and now I have the annoying rattle when the road surface is a bit rough. cannot see anywhere it could have got there but gone there it has:cry:

I found the problem to be a fault in the box when it failed again

Jesus H Christ!!!???

Whoever "did " that gearbox wants taking lovingly by the short and curlies to the local Trading Standards office and made an example of:eek:.

I`m almost lost for words :D-- dont worry a good dinner will sort me out(y)

A Fiat dealership told me that they no longer overhaul gearboxes themselves. They are just too complicated and every different one requires a myriad of special tools, plus a shed load of experience.

For them the safest and most cost effective solution is a Fiat factory reconditioned gearbox (service replacement) as opposed to a new box.

Yes the boxes are expensive but the job is done in a day, the customer gets a fully warranted box including labour should it pack up or develop any issues.

Sort of makes sense.

The last gearbox I overhauled many moons ago was a Singer Chamois/Imp Transaxle box. I'd hate to tackle a modern six speed 3 shaft box.

Showing your age there S130:)

I lived next door to a fitter at the local steelworks and he had an Imp. At one point he was "improving " the performance!! He would come home off the 6-2 shift whip out the engine, work on it, then put it back in before teatime and go down the pub with me later. He did this every day for 4 days , and travel to work in it each morning:eek:.

Those were the days eh:rolleyes:. Mostly you could work easily under the bonnet and didnt need a degree in plumbing to understand what all the pipes were for:confused:
