Hello.
I have a ducato 2.8tdti. (motorhome). I had anew gear box fitted about 13 months ago. On a recent trip out i notice a small drip of oil. when i had a look the oil looks like it is coming from the gear box (thats where the drip is just underneath the lowest point).
when i clean the oil off the gear box i noticed is was a red colour.
Does anyone know if this is gearbox oil or power steering oil?
It only seems to drip when the motor as been running.

Thanks:)

If the new gearbox was filled with the original Tutela SAE 75W/85 transmission oil, it is the same colour as Auto transmission fluid - red & as all the power steering system on RHD vehicles (except the LH part of the rack) is on the opposite side to the gearbox it would be safe to say it is the gearbox that is leaking. Unless it is LHD whereas the power steering pipes etc would be on the gearbox side but if it is on & under the gearbox it would be safe to say it is from the gearbox. Maybe check the breather is not blocked?
Cheers

Thanks for the reply.
The Van Is a LHD.
The oil is not only on the gear box but on the track rod ends and other things around that area like.
If the van has stood for long periods of time then there is no oil leak. it only seems to be when the van as been used i.e hot.
Where about is the breather pipe?

Thanks

I have never seen where the breather is either (must be on top of the box somewhere) or where it is located, but some posts have mentioned it being found when looking at refilling the gearbox, I would be cleaning all the oil off everthing & then taking it for a short run to see exactly where the leak is coming from as it could be blowing back from the gearbox onto the steering rack etc
