Technical Funny fluttering noise

A strange fluttering sound comes from somewhere in the front? when decelerating from any speed...more audible when slowing down from e.g 40mph, and noisier with windows shut. Any ideas what might be causing it?
Car is form February 2000, 1.2 16V and owned since new. 220k kms .

Or applying Brakes.. if so can you change sound by depressing clutch pedal ??

yes, just decelerating or taking foot off gas pedal.

I think I tested depressing clutch but it didn't make a difference; I'll try again tomorrow....

just went out for a drive and your hunch was right; if I depress the clutch the flutter sound disappears...and only decelerating ...new clutch necessary?

Quite possibly..

But rule out other things..

Any clutch work is a lot of time : money


On a 20 year old car that might not be a good investment

the car is otherwise pretty perfect...no rust, interior like new...

here in the UK..historically

We have a Crazy car buying Culture.. we pay 40% more for a new car.. than European buyers

Then at @4 years old our car values are @40% LESS than europe


So a costly repair soon becomes uneconomic.. on an older car

I liked the 188 punto

So I can appreciate the sentiment in keeping it 'alive'

I'd still rather invest money in a good older car rather than spend 15k on a new one...besides, my wife loves her old Punto and doesn't want a new one ;-)
