can anyone tell me i have a bog stadard x19 bertone 1981 1500cc i have been running it on leaded 4 star but where i live i can no longer get leaded so will it run on unleaded without damage to the engine.one more thing can it be converted so it does not need contact breaker points ie electronic ignition many thanks i hope one of you clever chaps can help me or point me in the right direction many thanks once again scaltec
 
Welcome to the forum:) .1981 should be ok with unleaded(don´t hold me on that)easiest way would be to check for other cars with the same engine and see what they use.As for electronic egnition, it´s been done fairly easy too:D
 
My 80 X 1500 runs just fine with unleaded, but in the U.S. that is all we could get then too.... Yes, you can change over to the newer style ignition and it isn't to terrible... Let me find the site a friend of mine put up on how to do it....
 
X1500 will run on unleaded fine.... all (post 79) have the same valve seats and valves that are compatible with unleaded fuels.

Electronic ignition is easiest to get from another model of Fiat with a sohc engine. What country do you live in? If you have other later models of Fiat (like Regata or even Lancia Delta) you should be able to source the entire setup from one. I would try use the Bosch unit first (reliability) Marelli Plex is very good too, but seem to have regular failures of ECU, and stator / lead.

They differ from the conventional point type, in that the coil trigger is provided by a four-pole reluctor (this is integral with the distributor shaft) which sweeps past a fixed stator pole. (this is mounted where you would expect the points to be) As the reluctor rotates and passes the stator, a magnetic pulse is created, breaking the coil primary circuit (low tension) via a transistorised electronic module thus generating the (high tension) voltage in the secondary winding.

This system has no electronic control over the timing of the spark but it does deliver the spark consistently and reliably. It works 100 % or not at all. The 2 components that fail, usually heat related, are the stator and lead and the ECM. I have never replaced either of these on the bosch unit, but have many times on the Marelli units

There are also aftermarket units that fit into your existing distributor, like Lumenition, that replaces the points with an optical trigger

I've used the Allison (now Crane Cams) XR-700 electronic ignition in two
of my X1/9s for years with no problems. The wheel that fits over the distributor
cam has to be filed a little to fit but it's obvious and the price is right.
I should add about the aftermarket lead additives they are expensive and
if they really contain lead, are dangerous to handle.
 
HI all many thanks for all the responses, i am very gratful for all the advice you all have given.I aquired the x19 a few months ago and its been stood up for years i managed to get its mot.d and it is a solid one with hardly any rust i am just rubbing it down and hope to get it sprayed next week so i think you will all see alot of me on here i am so glad i found this forum it really rocks many thanks again you are all stars scaltec
