Can anyone shed any light on fuel pump problems?? I am having a complete disaster with my red uno turbo it is getting to the point where I am sick of the sight of it!! A couple of weeks before Brooklands show we put a new Bosch fuel pump on as the one that was on the car kept getting stuck ( if you hit it hard it would work again ), after it was fitted the car ran ok but the pump was really noisy,it got worse and it stopped working, the car had only been used 3 times! We took it back and got a replacement for it. Our mechanic friend noticed that the in line fuel filter had some rust in it, so we dropped the tank to find that the bottom was starting to go inside. We have now fitted a new tank, new in line filter and fuel filter and the 3rd pump. He took it out for a test drive for 20 mins and it was fine, I took it out 2 days later and it broke down again! after getting it towed home he is sure that the pump has ceased again!! He did suggest the alternator may be at fault but isn't totally conviced as no other electrics are being blown, but to be honest the car isn't going anywhere! If anyone has any ideas or answers, cheers! (before I scrap the damn thing!!)

Maybe some rust or dirt remained elsewhere and blocks your pump?
Here's what I do, (we have pretty bad fuel here, so I my pump blocks from time to time):

Simply reverse pump's contacts. Use 2 pieces of wire, and connect pump to it's jack, but + to -, and - to +.

Then, turn on the ignition key and pump will rotate in opposite direction, throwing out all the dirt...

(You may do this while pump is in the tank for a quick fix, but best thing to do is to remove the pump and do it outside. Mine "puked" some really nasty black stuff first time )

Yep proberly still a bit of rust in it i had the same trouble with a new pump years back, happend twice i think just like yours.
Think in the end i pulled the pump apart to get the crap out,not really recomended as i think you have to bend a bit or the top part of the outer pump casing to get the internals out, then bend it back down when you put it back together and hope it dont leak.

My Uno Turbo has the same exact problem, I have use 3 different replacement fuel pump this week! I have spent hours cleaning out all fuel system from the tank, fuel hoses, filters, pressure regulators and even injection system. All was dirty with rusted part, but I manage to clean it up and install fresh new pump. I can start the car, but after I left it idle for 5 minutes, the fuel pump start to gave noisy sound and machine idle became unstable before engine complety shut down (likely due to lack of fuel entered injection unit, i can feel the fuel flow from the hoses). If I try to drive the car, the engine won't shut down if i keep press the pedal above 2000rpm, but if i keep it below or idle, engine will shut down with jerky feel as like it was out of fuel. Anyone can shed a light on this? Is it a problem with the fuel pressure regulator?

Do you guys still have the rear filter between tank and pump? Maybe it needs replacing as they breakdown over the years and let through everything they have filtered out as well as the element its self :(.

People have a habbit of removing them as they are not easy to buy and as it's 12mm fuel line which is also hard to come by radiator hose is used instead . Have a look and report back :)

The turbo's pump is not in the tank like on the SPI setup BTW ;).

Yes Louie Bee, I have replace both filter, one between tank and fuel pump and the other one in the engine compartment. Yes the rear filter is expensive and hard to find...

Good man MFC for the rear filter.

whats the pipe like between rear filter and pump? internal breakdown is my next suspect point and if not a blockage in the tank.
its a normal rubber hose louie bee...what do you mean internal breakdown? I may need to takedown the tank and see its internal condition, is there any filter (screen type) in UT tank?

my problem was solve by replacing the fuel pressure regulator...apparently it has malfunction due to age...

the 12mm id fuel pipe (nitrile) used on our uno turbo's is hard to come by, fiat used to sell it for around £25 for 10 inches, but no more, make sure your not using water heater hose like everyone does, because over time the petrol breaks it down and it turns to cheese, i had to buy pipe used for cosworths, but its very thin walled and you have to modify the pipe route so no kinks! good to hear your problem is fixed, Ant!!
