Hi all newbie here with little DIY car experience. Just inherited this 1.1 sporting (2000).

MOT for one year with no advisories! Thought that sounds good. However, exhaust seems to chug during idle either hot or cold, injection system light appears intermittently, smell of fuel in and around car whilst running (dont think its a tank problem) and i have discovered this pipe all taped up (see pic) ... can anyone identify the pipe for me? And would this taped pipe possibly be the cause of the other issues ... i have searched the forum for the same issues but wanted to ask about this pipe before looking at other possibilities.

Many Thanks

thats one of the fuel pipes, take the air box off and look where the pipes go there will be an arrow telling if its the feed or return, if theres a hole then its a major problem but it there is i dont think some electric tape would hold it back

it is the return (having removed the air thingymajig).

Does anyone think that this damaged pipe may be the cause of the other symptoms?

with that crimp on crap you would have to change all the pipe OR

cut the damaged section off the rubber part leaving enough room for a fuel hose clip and get apiece of iirc 8mm copper pipe flare both ends and out it into the rubber section and get another piece of rubber to the tb

I had a fuel smell in my last Cinq and it was dowmn to a leaking petrol cap. The fuel gasses leaked into the cavity and then was present in the car all the time. the only problem is if you buy a new cap on ebay etc for about £6.00, you will have a new key. It's certainly worth trying that, it worked for me. Obviously sort out the dodgy pipe first.

I removed the tape earlier and can see no reason for it being there! No obvious leak form the pipe, no obvious damage or wear on the pipe, ran the car on idle for ten mins with no sign of leak etc and took the car for a 20 minute run with no issues on the pipe so back to square 1!

i am going to show my ignorance now ... regarding the other problems i mentioned in my initial post ... can someone point me to the map sensor in my photo so i can see if unpluggin that has an effect on the injectin light and the sluggish idle.
