Could be a faulty thermostat sticking open thinking it is already hot.
Check the top and bottom hoses and see if they are both getting warm when you start up.

I went to get the car checked out today and apparently the vaccum advance unit isnt working so thats probably the problem right?

Re: LB's Fuel Consumption

Can anyone tell me how would a thermostat stuck open affect the fuel consumption?

Because cars dont run as well when they are cold. And this causes them to use more fuel.

The thermostat helps the engine warm up quicker and helps maintain the engine at its correct temp.

So replaced my thermostat this afternoon and re-tuned. But i wasn't sure about the timing. Is there a reason that the timing is set with the vacuum advance off? I mean if you know it should be say 15 degrees advanced at normal idle, isn't that easier to do than adjusting it before attaching the advance and then re-adjusting the idle?

Variations in timing can occur once the advance unit operates and the balance weights take effect. By disconnecting the vacuum advance and checking the timing at idle you are ensuring that the timing is set with zero advance/ retard occuring at the distributor. This ensures that the timing is set as accurately as possible (y)
