I think we have confused each other regarding the diff.
I think we did, yes.
I though you were talking about the CV joints. Like in this definition:

But if that is what you feel about the gearbox, of course you do as you feel more comfortable about it, and if that is changing the gearbox you do so.
But first, make sure the noise is coming from the gearbox to not have a situation like with the wheels bearings, when you replaced them and still have the noise.
And if the noise is coming from the gearbox, it could be from the central shaft's bearing, not from the diff. And once you take the gearbox down to replace with another, you should know that replacing the bearing inside the gearbox is very easy with the help of Mr Wild's thread:

To be honest the gearbox is pretty worn out. The input shaft splines are worn. The diff is fairly noisey and the gears are a bit crunchy to select sometimes. Its done 120k miles. Probably not a bad thing to change it out anyway.

I'm going to change the wheels over and if that doesn't solve It, I will look to change the cv joints.
 
interesting turn of events. nothing has been changed, but now the sound does not happen when loading up the drivers side, but it has got worse on the passenger side???

have ordered a new wheel bearing and will try and change the passenger side now!!!
 
So in the beginning, what you said in the first post on this thread, you've replaced only the driver side bearing?
I was totally under impression that you've replaced them both, it is usually recommended to change them at the same time.
It means that's it then, the noise should stop after you'll replace the other bearing.
Bu how come you didn't begin to think "is it coming from the other bearing?"

You only change the bearing that is gone. They very rarely both go at the same time.

The sound was on the right side and you could hear it when turning left.
It then started on the left side when turning right. It is now barely noticeable on the right hand side, but it is sounding quite loud in the left side.

Originally it never sounded from the left side which is why I didn't change that side bearing.
