Technical Friday Car?

I'm beginning to worry about the Muiltipla we've just bought. First the aux belt tensioner and a stalling problem and now we have an engine management fault. Fortunately it's still under warranty for another couple of months.
On Friday my wife was driving along when the rev counter started going from 0 to full revs. The the engine started coughing and the engine warning light came on. She took it to the car sales place who say they think it's a coil pack and have shipped it off to their repair shop.
I'm wondering whether it's actually the crankshaft sensor but I suppose they'll use a code reader to find out.

You haven't said if it is a petrol or a diesel. The coil pack comment suggests a petrol but please confirm. Even if it is a petrol faulty coil packs don't tend to make a car go to full revs. A faulty throttle position sensor or a stuck throttle cable will though. If however the car is in fact a diesel then a completely different line of diagnosis is required.

Made the tacho go haywire..electrical fault

2004 petrol mk 2 . The engine didn't go to full revs just the rev counter.

Do yourself a favor and buy a code reader. They can be had cheap off ebay and will demystify your car.

I will do. I've got a U281 which works for Volkswagens, Seats, Skodas. I haven't tried it in the Fiat yet (mainly because it's not been on the drive long enoough). Any other recommendations?
