fixing remote keys

hi,

only one of our blue keys works remotely on our 1.8hlx.

are these easy to fix? i have tried swapping batteries, and that didn't work.

fiat have quoted around 40 quid for a new one, plus the cost of coding. are there any cheaper options? i've got the code and the red key.

Fiat can only do the remote alarm key fobs, timpsons will just cut you another key and possibly clone the transpoder so the key will override the immobiliser.

If you want the keyfobs to work properly then i recommend you goto Fiat.

My car only has the one working Keyfob for the alarm, the other key is like new and never used, i'm guessing its losts its memory hence why it doesn't work the alarm. But i ain't worrying about it, if i do i will worry on the day when my working remote key packs in. LOL

But don't you re-programme the blue key with the red one??

Didn't put that very well. Meant to say programme the blue key into the ECU with the red one.

As far as i'm aware the red key deals with the ECU so yes i would say its required to reinitialise the transponder in the key to the ECU immobiliser.

The Red Key when used all the time, accesses the ECU and hence with continued use can cause the blue keys to fail or loose the ECU programming to deactivat ethe immobiliser or damage the ECU.

ive had the same prob, i can get a key cut that can start car(with copied immob code) but no shop can copy the remote central locking /alarm coding, fiat will do it for £47.50 as long as you have the metal tag which is attached to the red key(it has on it the 6 digit alarm code) if this has been lost fiat quoted me £300 plus vat. so ive decided to wait till the one key i have that works breaks, then get a couple of keys cut to start the car and get an aftermarket alarm with central locking.

Its perfectly safe to use the red key to drive the car. It won't damage the ECU. The red key allows the immobiliser system to be opened for learning blue keys, but only if you follow the sequence.
It does nothing else suspicious or clever.
