I think it is of no coincidence that as cars are getting safer more people are losing there life's on the roads, OK there is always going to be an increase in road users, but I think proportionally I am correct in saying it is rising.

way off. the good old days were 13 times more deadly.

"In 1950, the fatal accident rate was about 95 deaths per billion vehicle km and in 2000 it was 7.3 deaths per billion vehicle km. The roads got 13 times safer over 50 years."

these days you have a much better chance of avoiding having an accident in the first place and also a much better chance of survival when you do crash. hooray for progress.

That link shows that the number of deaths may have gone down, but I'm sure the number of accidents has gone UP! I've seen it mentioned that the 'safety' aspect of modern cars is a contributing fact towards people concentrating less on driving because they are so well insulated from the road, plus the car does so much of the work for you. Cars may be safer when you have a crash, but their mollycoddling could be lulling many drivers into a false sense of security and complacency leading to more accidents.

Remember that though deaths from car accidents have gone down, pedestrian deaths I'm sure has gone UP. If it's not cars running into pedestrians it must be something else! All that's happening is that car drivers are surviving accidents better but are having more of them. Perhaps if more drivers got killed then drivers might wake up to the fact that they are driving a potential killing machine rather than a 5 star NCAP air cushion that will save them in any situation...

I do feel that more effort should be made to make people reduce their chances of having accidents rather than make it safer WHEN they have one. Education is the key along with shock tactics. Treat the cause rather than the symptom and try and cut the number of accidents happening in the first place!

having more "real" traffic officers none of this highways agency PCSO style road safety teams in their 4x4's (dont get me wrong they have there place but they should not be replacing police traffic officers) would help the amount of things you see that go unpunnished the only time you see a traffic car is at an accident where are they the rest of the time filling in paper work or sat in the back of a safety camera van??
