First Car, First Insurance - £270 =)

It's really down to if you want to take the risk. As I needed business insurance also on the van then I wasn't going to take the risk of not only loosing out on the car due to an accident, but also any gear I happen to be carrying at the time.

If you're happy taking the risk and you don't get caught then I say good for you! Con the buggers as much as you can! But if you do just don't come complaining here :p

When i got my first car (Fiat panda) dad phonned around for some quotes and theres something they dont exactly make clear....your no claims bonus is for one car only.

My dad has full no claims bonus but when he phonned for a quote on a second car with me as a named driver they weren't having it, said he has to start again on 0NCB with his second car. That was budget insurance

Yeah, thats why a few companies now offer a discount for second cars.

My mums had 4 cars insured in her name at times (hers, 2x brothers and mine) and no ones ever questioned why she needs four cars!

I find it very hard to believe that the guy saying the main driver of the car doesnt have to be the main insured. If this has been organised with your insurance company then your premium would have gone up from the standard quote you'd have found on the internet.

its all good people saying ive got my mum/dad or grandma to insure my car and it was only £300 fully comp, you seriously might as well feed your money to the dog.

like many have said as soon as you have an accident they will start asking questions and WILL void your insurance meaning all those monthly payements or however you pay has been for nothing, you may as well drive around with no insurance, also on your mum dads insurance your never going to be able to build your own no claims, insurers arent stupid they make out they are but their not, they know full well your 60 yr old dad doesnt drive a modified hgt with bodykit and full ice install.

if you own your own car, you should own your own policy imo

when i passed my test i couldnt wait to get the ncb ball rolling, knowing in a few yrs theres a good chance i could drive a nice sporty car and not have to pay over the odds on insurance.

Again someone else who sees the light :D

I feel the same...

So the verdict is to all of you who want to leech of your mum/dad/grandad etc. insurance do so at your own risk of getting it void by the insurance company should you have an accident and look forward to high prices even when your over 21 because you have no NCB! :)

Hey, I've searched for many quotes from different people... the criteria i put in was..

Punto 60SX 1.2 5 Door
My mum as the main driver, as obviously being my first car etc it's gonna be cheaper.
She's got max no claims (driven for 23 yrs without any claims)
Car value = ~1000
Annual Mileage = ~10000
Mods - Nope
Parked - On a drive
Fully comp.

I work with HSBC so I thought they'd be cheap, they quoted £780 cause I'm staff, which I thought 'first car, thats pretty good'. Even my mum thought so..

I went to the website http://www.insuresupermarket.com and gave them a shot..

Provident : £288 - No excess. £270 with £250 excess
Kwik Fit - £300 , £100 excess and free MOT
Some other company, cant remember the name - £330, £100 Excess - Free MOT with Kwik Fit and free Roadside assistance.

W00p
=)

Thing is though mate.....this isn't your first insurance is it?? you're a named driver and aren't building a no claims discount either. One way or another, eventually,. you'll have to leave your mum's policy and pay for yourself and it will work out at the £700+ you were qted because named driver experience counts for nothing! (n)

for a standard online quote they require standard criteria, but if you arrange a policy over the phone you can have any special terms you like. i can take out a policy in my name on any of your cars, and you legally cant stop me. i would be the main driver on the policy and legally insured fully comprehensive on any of your cars, even though i'm not the registered keeper and i dont even live near the registered address. all i need is the registration mark. trust me its been done before more than once.

if you are a named driver on a policy there are no standard restrictions on the amount of use. an insurance company can impose special terms, and they sometimes do for young drivers, to reduce the risk. but it is not possible to prove how much a certain person has used a car. even if the vehicle did 40000000 in a year you cant prove that a certain person did any of those miles.

that is why its silly to tell an insurance company that you do more than 10k a year, it will push the price up, but even if the vehicle did 20k that year your insurance couldn't be void as you can say someone else drove it for half the miles. they cant proove you wrong so they cant void the policy.

P.S. We ask the mileage of the car, not how many you do a year. Easy way for us to check your annual mileage.........good old MOT certificates, they have your mileage on 'em! we'll always find out!

I'm on My dads insurance on CIS, we made it clear to them that he would be the main driver and I would be the named driver however I would use it more. They say there is no problem with this.

For example say your parent was the main driver but got hit by a bus and couldn't drive for 12 months, does that mean as a named driver you couldn't use the car at all becasue you would be doing more miles than the policy holder?

I pay for the insurance and it is only £560 fully comp. (mk1 punto, "97, 55S)
Also with CIS and various other companies they allow named drivers to collect a discounted NCB.

We made the whole thing clear to the insurance company and they said that it was fine.
