Hey , i'm new to this site so please be nice :D

Im turnign 17 is about 2 weeks and have seen the FIAT PUNTO!

It looks like a small sweet car with good insurance, but i'm a lad and i want more. I'v been savign and have about 1K now so thought about modifying its exterior and interior (not much the engine as this is just for appearance for now) ...

Guys and Gals i need ideas!! i want a paint job and for it to look awesome but have no clue... im a pretty open guy, love weird and wacky colours...

i like the tinted windows and lowered suspension but want your thoughts..

Any tips and tricks on how to make it awesome inside and out would be sooo helpful!! as i said im a newbie looking for some advice!!
thanks!! Louis, :):):):):)

Welcome Louis, I know its easier said that done at your age, but personally I'd buy it and enjoy it as it is, save your money for running it without having to be tight, and and spare cash put towards its replacement for a few years time :)

I am probably going to sound like a snobby rich kid (i'm not) but i have a job which is decent pay, and while im not paying for any bills, just money to go out and obviously petrol i was thinking of making my car dope! haha,

Agree with Jon on this one. It sounds boring but its no good spending all that money on a car but neglecting the major parts like brakes, servicing, ect. I would look at buying a resonable spec like a sporting, then just customise little things to make it individual.

Each to their own, I'm in a similar possition, however 1/2 of what I earn is currently being saved towards buying a house, I've already to fairly new car brought out right, but then again I didn't ever feel the need to make any of my previous cars Dope :p

You're a new driver. Leave the car standard. Every modification, even adding a stripe, must be advised to your insurance company, who will then load the premium as it is "modified". It would also be more likely to attract unwanted police attention. Leave as standard, gain a year's no-claims, spend on maintenance and save for a replacement.

you guys obviously know more than me so i respect you for replying to a newbie :D i just want to to look like a sweet ride! lol

Why spend the money on modifying your punto when you are going to need an awesome paint job on that Lamborghini you will have in a few years because you saved your money....:D

I've just turned 20, and have only just done my first real modification.

My advice is to wait a while and build up some NCB, getting major mods at seventeen is a brilliant way to waste THOUSANDS of pounds that you could be spending on your better car two years in the future.

Also, if you have a grand knocking about, why not get a newer/faster/bigger car?

pretty much my advice,

detailing something "different" may be a good way to go

and spend a few hours on comparison sites/etc to get the BEST deal on insurance, easy to save some serious money at your age ;)

Easy, Tigers! He's a kid, of course he wants mods so my advice is do it! When I started out you were nothing if you didn't have a Cortina MK2 with a jack-up kit and twin sidepipes, now I'm just a boring old fart in a Stilo MW!

Maggers. Causing controversy everywhere he goes.

Although most posters in this thread have a very valid point. The chance that he'll listen is slim so I'm just going to say 2 things, make a members motors thread and take lots of pictures and please make sure you notify your insurance about any mods you do. I don't understand why people go a bit over board with having to tell them everything. The stripes on my. Gp aren't declared but I think I'll be fine if worst comes to worst. The wheels and exhaust are however.

Welcome to the world of fiats Lou! My first car was a MK 1 panda and I'm still here driving a fiat 16 years later! Their infectious lol

There are lots of inventive styling mods you can do cheaply enough - I done loads of them on my first one and it's only when I dig the photos out that I realise that some of them were not so good (thought I looked soooo cool with my "bass the final frontier" sticker on the back :bang:

Anyway that was along time ago and unfortunately it's a different world now so any real modifications should be declared to your insurance. Don't wanna **** on your chips but you'll get stung if you get caught. That said some mods don't increase your premium if you declare them, they just like to know (y)

As a new driver you not really going to be able to get away with alot of stuff. Most styling changes don't add alot though really even if they do need declaring.

What you do comes down to your own taste (and how much money you got), its your car afterall. What i would be doing in your situation i think would be as already mentioned, get it all serviced and tip top running. And look to get GT bumpers, skirts, spoiler, wheels etc. And make it look like a decent top spec punto even if it isn't fast to match. Then you could doo the inside upto GT spec as well, centre console, seats, door trims etc. Then when you go some ncb, look to upgrade the brakes to GT ones, lower it etc, depends how much more the insurance would want though.

Stock GT looks great IMO, better than any of the bodykits out there. And i can say that my GT gets alot of looks when out and about as you just don't see nice looking mk1's very often anymore, most have been chavved and scrapped :(

Lets just hope so as you don't want to be up a creak without a paddle when it comes to insurance. If you're left with a void policy can you afford to pay a few £100k out of your OWN pocket when you get sued?

Personally I'd pick up the phone and check, you may find there isn't even any cost for declaring it, I know with some insurance companies there isn't ;)

It's a stripe!? How on earth would that make a difference?

Every modification, including "just a stripe" gives an insight into the owner's mindset. From this, and experience, the insurance company will re-assess the risk and premium. Declaring it probably gives you a brownie point, not doing so may count against you after a bump.

I have seen occasions where the first few modifications add premium, but as more money is spent on the car, premiums can go down as there is an assumption that the owner will take more care.

Best to tell them.
