I`m going to strip, clean & rebuild my carb (32 TLF 12 on the 1108cc FIRE) due to an intermittent idling issue (occasionally wont idle, I suspect due to dirt in the float chamber/jets).

The cheapest place I can find for the kit is Webcom @ £28.61.

I havent done carbs for a few years, but carb kits used to be under a tenner!

£29 seems a bit steep for what is essentially a few bits of card, a couple of 1" square bits of rubber with some plastic & a screw.

Anyone got them cheaper anywhere?

Cheers

You still need a gasket kit to put it back together properly after youve cleaned it though Craig.

You can make them, but they are quite a fiddly shape on carbs.

As long as your careful, theres no harm in cleaning them manually, a can of aerosol carb cleaner & a toothbrush does wonders very quickly & its hardly a complex carb, so I think the ultrasonic things overkill!

Carb kits may be an easy choice but another member once recommended using ultra sounds to get ridd off all the bits of crap in side a carb. Said it worked better than the kits.

bit hard to get hold of one unless you own a tattoo parlour

I used neat Reddex in my carb to clean it all out, worked perfectly :)

Redex or carb cleaner down the choke will clean the inlet & choke area to a small degree, but if you`ve got sediment inside the float chamber or trapped behind a jet (which is what I suspects wrong with mine, you`ll have to strip the carb to get to it.

Sometimes the gaskets will stay intact when you open the carb up, but while you`ve got it open you might as well clean the lot properly, check for throttle spindle wear, change the diaphrams & stick it all back together with new gaskets after.

Then you`ve got a nice clean carb that shouldnt give you any agro for a while.

You should then change the fuel filter & ideally the engine bay fuel pipes, they are likely to be very brittle if they havent been done before, I`ve seen quite a few with the pump to carb pipe splitting & believe me, when they go, petrol goes everywhere....

Bacon fat can also be smeared over the carb to protect after it Ucof... but dont use it on any rubber parts.

Hmmm... I usually just re-use the gasket

I think you should replace the fuel inlet needle valve - may not be absolutely essential but it is a part that wears.

I often find it helpful to drill out the idle jet a small amount - from 0.43mm to 0.5mm - using a tiny drill. This helps the mixture screw to actually have some effect. I suspect that excess air gets in around the throttle spindle when the carb is old.

Check that the choke pull-down capsule is working - I have seen a couple that didn't.

The best thing I ever discovered for carburettors is compressed air... blow out all the residues from cleaning, and banish blocked jets for good.
