Hello Panda people.

After enjoying the lovely smell of diesel in the cabin fofr a week or two, I decided to open the bonnet to see what's up.

Found fuel filter housing leaking around the lid. Took it off, replaced the filter while I was there, replaced the rubber seal, closed it up and thought that's that.

After a test drive, still leaking (a bit less). 🥴 Don't see any cracks on the housing itself. Now, is it possible that the pump is putting too much pressure in there? Although anything extra should go right back to the tank. 🤷‍♂️

Any ideas? Keep in mind that I tried driving on petrol not so long ago (after realising I pumped it out and flushed the system, of course).

Could the petrol have caused some damage somewhere, during the couple of days it took me to figure out I'm an idiot and that I filled it up with unleaded 95?

Runs fine, if a bit sooty (rich?) but that's hard to judge...

Update: looking at the instructions, thre's talk about aligning markings and rotating 50 degrees; my filter element is a radially symmetrical tube that just clicks into the lid. Nothing to align or rotate 🤷‍♂️

Two types of housings and corresponding filters

UFI and Purflux

How they are fitting are different

UFI push and Purfux screw I could be wrong

The top is tightened to 30Nm which is beyond hand tight and needs a special tool

@irc @DaveMcT have more experience with the diesel panda than me

Mine threw up fuel temperature errors. Some searching on www showed the fix is to fit a new filter housing. Mine needed a new element and the QD couplings were all mashed so I paid the extra and got a new filter unit. The error went away and has not returned. Being able to disconnect pipes was handy while I tried to diagnose a fuel pressure problem.

I was able to remove the retaining ring with a curved jaws oil filter pliers. they open really wide. Obviously, the correct tool is better.

They've gone up (of course)

I guess the manual I have could be for the other type.

I unscrewed the cap and put it back on, seems fine for now. I guess it didn't seat right.

That would've been my suggestion.
I have found that some canisters just randomly start weeping and the only fix is replacement, but they have all been 15+ years old, and I think the seals and plastic are probably well past their design life by then anyway.

Mine was doing the same. I just give it a bit more of a tighten. As previously mentioned hand tight isn't enoughIt seems to have stopped the seeping from the top. But still has a small drop from the drain screw housing.

Had to get it serviced anyway as it failed MOT on multiple points. 380 Euros later, registered, and for sale.

Japanese cars spoiled me, I'm too old and too busy right now to deal with Italian engineering 😂
