Technical Filler pipe repairable?

Argh! A case of two steps forward and then one back!

My 750 is all road legal having got tax the other day, so first stop local petrol station to fill up for the first time in five years :slayer:

Remembered not to use the diesel pump by force of habit but as I'm stood there noticed a stream of fuel coming out from the bend in the filler pipe

I've managed to split the pipe on the 'top' of two of the corrugations right at the bottom of the bend, just about the worst place it could have gone where any fuel in the pipe will sit.

Do any of you have suggestions as to what I might use to repair this or am I looking at a hunt for a replacement filler pipe? ISTR someone making a type of tape that was petrol resistant but can't recall who or what it was called and my google-fu has deserted me.

You can indeed repair them. I've had to do it on my 4x4 (pipes inpossible to get). Can't remember for the life of me what stuff it was though.

Or alternativly you could get a replacement (PM me )

:chin: Might well be doing so Off to look at a potential parts donor this weekend though not sure what's left of it at this stage though.

Meanwhile I think I'll try and tack the splits up with a soldering iron and then wrap it up with some of this Silicone Self Fusing Tape AKA "Kraken Tape" as there's a Maplin on my way home

Soak some of the Kraken tape in petrol to see what it does before using it. If it degrades I would be warry using it.

Epoxies tend to be petrol proof, you could repair the rip with chemical metal type epoxies, though they're not very flexible.

I damaged my hose but it was near the bottom and I was able to cut it shorter. I was considering replacing it with a PVC pipe, I measured it and it would need to be about 48-50mm internal diameter. I was planning on cutting the fuel pipe just at the top of the corrogated part and hose clipping the new PVC pipe on. At the time there was some hose on ebay, can't see it now though.

Yup, I reckon it would have been OK if the splits were in the "troughs" rather than the "peaks", slap a bit of epoxy in there and then wrap the pipe in reinforcing tape. I have some known petrol safe epoxy and suitable tape in the shed of course.

Well the silicone repair tape looks to be impervious to petrol

Even better it is cheaper in B&Q.

Even better still it is a whole pound cheaper in the electrical section rather than the decorating one (identical product in a poly bag instead of a blister pack ).

I wrapped the filler pipe around the area of the splits with a few layers and covered it with some water proof cloth tape for strength. Seems to be holding up OK. Will stick to half a tank full for now though

Braved a full tank on Saturday (armed with a drain tray and jerry can ) and still looking good!

A big for the silicone tape I reckon!

I have to do the same job on Jim's panda soon... He split the pipe on some trip to the arse hole of no where.

I'll have a look in B&Q tomorrow, it's 10 per cent off for bears on Wednesdays
