I bought a fiat ulysse 2.0 Diesel w Reg 2000 about 4 weeks ago and all was well until the other day when driving home the clutch went on the car, i can not afford the £450 the garage wants to replace it so was going to have a go at it myself but can not find any info on what is involved in doing this and any help or info would be very much appreciated.

There's nothing particularly unusual about doing the clutch on these except you can't get the gearbox right out, you can only pull it back onto the subframe. That does give you the advantage of not having to lift the heavy box of the floor, but makes lining up the clutch a little tricky.

thanks for the reply, I now have the gearbox out and the clutch removed but i now have a problem, can anyone tell me how the release bearing works on this ? as it does not seem to work the way i would have expected.

It may be that you have a pull-type clutch. Unfortunately there are loads of different engine-gearbox combinations, but yours could have a pull-type clutch. If this is the case then the bearing does indeed work in the opposite direction. Unfortunately there are also two designs of pull clutches used on peugeot/citroen/fiat vehicles. You can tell which type you have by looking at the new clutch kit. If it's in 3 parts then you fit as follows: Fit cover and plate as usual. Fit bearing onto clutch fork. Refit gearbox. Once gearbox is bolted back up lever clutch fork AWAY from the engine until it clicks into position on the clutch cover.
If it's in two parts with the bearing fixed onto the cover you have to fit tha clutch and then make sure the fingers of the fork engage as you push the box in. Fiddly but not too diffiult once you line it up. (bearing is normally marked 'haut' and 'bas' high and low to help position it). I expect it will be the first type. Hope that helps.
If it's not a pull type clutch, well ignore all of that!

thanks for the info, what it is is that i just bought the car a few weeks ago and can not afford the £550 the garage wanted to do the job so am having a go at it myself, thanks again for your help.

ok I now have my clutch kit but have yet another question and that is which way round does the friction plate go ? as i take it that it has to go on one way and not the other if that makes sense.

Unless marked otherwise the flat side of the plate always fits to the flywheel. The bit with springs and things fits to the pressure plate. When you tighten the bolts on the pull-type clutch the fingers will come out as you tighten. (The opposite of a conventional set-up).

thankyou Flying clutchman for all your help, I now have the clutch kit installed and the gearbox back in the car but have hit yet another problem and that is with the clutch slave cylinder is now leaking, i put it in and put the pipe back in and bled it but it is leaking around where the pipe goes in, do you have any ideas on this one ?.

if its coming from around the thread you can sometimes seal it with some PTFE tape if it's coming out from around the pipe this means the union joint is failing to seal have you tried trying to tweek it up a bit more?? if not it probably means a new pipe needs to be made

it is not that type of fitting but would have been better if it was, it is just a push in sort of thing with a clip that goes in behind it to stop it coming out, the thing is it was never a problem but is now after refitting.

hmmm, that a different setup to what i have seen then can you take a picture and upload it so we know what we are looking at and the best way to sort it for you

ok those type of fittings are a pain in the rear, the only thing i can suggest is to get a new clip to make sure it is holding the pipe in tight enough it might be worn and giving a bit of play on the union other than that i'm at a bit of a loss as to what you can do to sort that

Never had one off, but there may be a tiny cup-type seal that fits on the end of the pipe. Vauxhall use a similar fitting and I lost one on an astra once. Why did you split the pipe from the cylinder?

it does not look like anything is missing from the end of the pipe but you never know there could be, i had never done a clutch before and thought that would have to come off but seen later that it did not need to come off, I have a new onw on order and will be here tomorrow if that does not work it must be the seal at the end of the pipe but god knows what i will do then.

if i take a pic of the end of the pipe would you be able to tell if there was something missing ?.

Sorry for the delay. Yup you're missing a little black seal/o-ring. Check it's not stuck squashed in the cylinder still.

that is what it was and i have just worked it out in the last half hour and it was as you say stuck in the cylinder, it has been a nightmare i got a new cylinder but as you can guess that was no good so was pulling my hair out by this time :bang: but i found the attached pic and could see from that there was as you have said a small o-ring missing so ordered one and got it today and just in the last hour finished it and i now have a working car, thanks to all that replied to my post.
