I have a Fiat Punto 99 and for some reason the fan works normally some times but does not starts at some other occasions (I guess). The car is drinking water so I need to keep topping it up. If the fan is working fine, the heater gauge in the car does not move too much i.e. the car is ok but if fan is not working the gauge goes to really high (3/4th) so I presume the car is overheating.

The car gets overheated only when I am stuck in traffic & car is moving really slow but it cool downs quickly as i go over 30/40 MPH

Ive noticed as well that if fan is not working the air coming from heating ducts is not hot when car is moving slowly & gets warmer if the car picks up the speed.

Today I drive the car for about 20 minutes in 1st/2nd gear and the fan gets started & car is not over heated.

But yesterday when the car gets over heated, the water gets leaked from engine (I guess). The garage guy looks at this & told me that it is coming from core engine plugs and in order to repair these they have to open the whole engine. Is that right? But today when I drive it, i have not seen any water leakage. If there is any water leakage it should be persistence, isn't it?

Does anyone know if this is a fan problem? If so is there anyway I could find out? If anyone has any ideas that would be great.

Thanks
T

Engine has to come out for core plug replacement -- there are 10, so look carefully. No need for "opening up" the engine, and some core plugs can be accessed with the engine in place at a pinch.

Fan not working on Mk1s is often an earth fault. See here.

No heater suggests no coolant or an air lock -- refill and bleed the system.

don't count on core plugs, my mk1 was losing water, stuck it in the garage at college and found the water pump was leaking from the shaft, New water pump and it was sorted

take to three garages ,,,,, see if they come with same fault ...

the three plug wire on the fan is my guess ..... not allowing fan to kick in ..

bleed and check for water leaks ,,,,,,

is top hose solid after 10 minutes of running ,,,,,

garage three times is best way for you .....

Could be a dual fault with both the engine temp sensor and the thermostat. Most coolant problems after leaks are caused by the thermostat not opening. Parking on some cardboard overnight may show leaks up.
