Hi all sorry this is my first post but to be honest ive joined due to a problem with a 2003 Punto Active Sport. We have just bought the car for my daughter and had it resprayed, she has just passed her test and is wanting to be out in it. After picking it up from the bodyshop we have taken it for an MOT and its failed on Emissions and the tester said it is smoking a little. I can do the work my myselfas I have restored my RS Turbo but I need to know what to replace to fix this problem.

Any info or a link to a thread with the same problem would be great.

Hi & Welcome here! Is it a petrol or a diesel & what colour is the smoke? Dark or light?

Oil smoke is usually blue-grey-ish, petrol or diesel smoke is dark... black-ish.

If it's blue -grey you may have valve stem seals leaking or piston ring wear / failure, so do a compression test dry first of all on all 4 cylinders, then do the same test wet & compare the readings. This should tell you if it is a valve stem oil seal problem or a piston ring problem.

A very white "smoke" could be steam....

Let us know... & good luck (y)

Hi thanks for the welcome, its a petrol and the smoke is dark grey. The comp is fine, id does smell like over fuelling infact it smells like an old carbed Ford lol

Try the coolant temperature sensor, when this fails the ECU gets false information, sometimes telling it that the engine is cold when it is actually warm...

Thanks its getting a new lambda sensor and plugs in today. Ive also been told to take it for a good blast out. Its been stood awhile getting the bodywork done. Ive been told a good blast out will help clear it out and get the cat working ????
