The last couple of times the techs worked on my Dualogic they kept referring it to it as a Selespeed (but then again they're a bunch of incompetent monkeys ).
Both systems are only as good as the software that controls it, the electro mechanical & hydraulic parts are simple enough but the software has to be exactly tailored to the vehicle it controls & some such as Alfa have had a fair bit of trouble. Not sure about the Punto but the Panda seems to have got it more or less right with the latest updates, it does have a few querks that you soon learn to overide if you keep it in auto mode.
It may linger too long in 1st gear if you press hard on the gas, the engine will sometimes begin to struggle on a slight incline when in 5th gear but
doesn't drop to 4th to compensate, those are the two main things I noticed but a quick flick of the stick will overide in an instant. Apart from that its always in the right gear at the right time & makes driving more relaxed
The gears & clutch are operated with hydraulics, this is the weird whiring noise you hear when you first open the drivers door & it powers up, some semi-autos like the Corsa & others just use solenoids to push in the gears
