Good Morning All

A few weeks ago I replaced the clutch slave cylinder on my daughters Fiat 500, with a lot of help from this forum and until yesterday the car was fine.

However, yesterday the clutch started to play up again and I notice there was fluid leaking from the rusty joint where the master and slave join together (I forget the technical name for the joint)

I knew that this is a common problem on the Fiat 500 and I did check that is was not leaking when I replaced the slave cylinder a few week ago, however, when I replaced the slave I didn't replace the pipe as I understand it is almost impossible to uncouple this joint.

I read a few online articles about these aftermarket joints whereby you cut out the existing rusty joint and replace with a pushfit part which I have ordered online.

Has anyone had much success with these parts and if so how did you cut the pipe, was it hacksaw etc?

Any advise if appreciated.

Kind regards

Dave

The connector in the ebay link (post 29 ind the thread John202020 recommended) looks very good. I would try this connector if I had this problem on my car. I would use a garden cutter, that cuts branches out of trees and busches. If its nice and sharp it will give you a clean cut. I have a small cutter for petrol hoses and so on, but basic working principle is the same.

That seller must be coining it in... those connectors can be got in packs of 5 for much less than that one. I think they are standard 8mm push-fit couplings.
I keep a few for emergency use, mostly for diesel fuel pipes.

Thanks you all for your replies, I did manage to find a previous article relating to this so I am going to do the job tomorrow.

I will keep everyone posted with the outcome but essentially it looks like a straightforward job.

Cheers

Hi everyone

Just to assist the forum and give an update. On the weekend I successfully managed to cut out the old joint between the clutch Master & Slave cylinder on my daughters Fiat 500 and replace with the plastic 8mm push fit part.

Once the front passenger wheel plus battery & battery tray was removed the job itself was quite straightforward and cutting the pipe was fairly easy with a junior hacksaw.

The more difficult part was bleeding the clutch which I had done successfully a few times before.

After struggling for 30 minutes I had to get my daughter slowly press the clutch pedal and as she pressed the pedal I would open the bleed nipple. Then once her foot was to the floor I would tighten it again. before the pedal returned to the up position. We repeated this for ten minutes and the clutch felt great.

Its odd that I had to use this method to bleed the clutch as, even though I had a tube on the nipple going into a jar of fluid the nipple itself seemed to be drawing air back into the system when the pedal was returning upward.

Anyway, all in all its was 3 hours start to finish and the clutch is working great again.

I haver attached a photo of the old joint, you can see the damage and why it was leaking fluid etc.

Many thanks for all the advise.

Kind regards

Dave
