Fiat 5 speed gearbox in Morgan

I'm just in the process of fitting a Fiat 1800 twin cam motor to my 1978 Morgan 4/4...should be a big improvement on the original Ford cross flow motor. Morgan fitted Fiat motors to 4/4s in 1982 and for a few years after, but sadly went back to Ford motors.

But I'm having trouble finding the right Fiat 5 speed box, ie the one Morgan used in 1982 or thereabouts. I have a 124 coupe box, but it seems a little high, creating difficulty lining up the engine and gearbox in the right plane.

All I know about the original Fiat box used by Morgan is that it has ratios of 3.61 (1st), 2.05, 1.36, 1.0 and 0.87 (5th) with reverse being 3.24.

I can't find any information on the net to identify which gearbox this was (ie which car it came out of or gearbox model number). Does anyone have that information, or know where I could find it?

ooooooo have you got any pictures of your morgan ur fitting the fiat lump too?

my dad had a 4/4 as his first car when he was 20, and now he's looking to buy another now he's 61 and retired! looking at the +8's tho hehe

I'd try contacting Morgan. IIRC, it was a straight factory to factory deal, so they should have records. Failing that, Morgan Owner's Club?

I'd not rule out the possibility that there were subtle changes to the engine mounts/chassis to make the fit possible.
