Technical fiat 126 gearbox oil

Technical fiat 126 gearbox oil

Haynes manual indicates Castrol Hypoy SAE 90 EP for the gearbox and the steering box. I looked on the web and Hypoy always brings up referenece to Castrol so it may be their 'brand' name for this type of oil.

I can find a reference to Hypoid gear oil and the description fits the use in gearboxes. Hypoid looks like a generic name. (Look up Penrite Hypoid 80W-90)

I make an assumption that the 600 gearbox would use the same as the 500.

So now that I have confused the situation all we have to do is sit back and wait for the mechanic that is lurking here somewhere to place a correction so we can all learn!

As Joe states above, the Niki 650/Fiat 126 manual I have suggests 90EP oil for the gearbox/differential.

Also I think the word hypoid is an engineering term that refers to the particular cut of the spiral gears.

Out of interest, I did own an old Alfa once that used non-EP oil (SAE 90) in the gearbox because of the metal alloy that was used to make the sychro rings.
