Hello all,

Today i decided to purchase a Farad Power cap for the amp, problem is it didn't come with any instructions.

How the hell do these need to be wired up?

Cheers

p.s. if anyones interested, they're on special from maplin for £40!

Power capacitors or Stiffening™ capacitors are used to assist an automobile that has a problem with dimming lights (voltage sag) or to help tighten up the bass. These capacitors store a large amount of power and then release it very quickly when the demand is the greatest from the amplifier. These capacitors release the current much faster than a battery can and do not force the amplifier's power supply to be at a loss when bass notes and other transients are greatest

that's the idea anyway

So it acts as a "surge supply" (incorrect name) so supplies the correct voltage top the amp if its input drops to below a threshold!

Doesnt it just connect +ve leg to +12v and -ve leg to amp??

Hold on, Im wrong. It connects to the 12v feed before the amp (+ve leg) then to ground (-ve leg) Gives a smooth power line!

Check this http://www.bcae1.com/capacitr.htm

If it is anything like a normal capacitor, be very careful of incorrect connection because they don't like it much the wrong way - it could lead to it blowing and I wouldn't like to think of what would happen if a 1 farad capacitor blew!

I expect that due to the size they may have put diodes etc. on to protect it, all you electrical/electronic engineers will tell me if i am wrong!

That one apparently has protection circuitry built in so no numpty (like me,especially!!):D could in advertantly blow the beast up. Id expect it really, given the buggers retail at abt £100 and something normally. The actual 1F capacitance could be gotten fairly easily, but to do it cheaply would be very ugly. If yu could hide it somewherem that may be a good option.

As for reverse connection. I have no idea, I cant remember whether it would have an effect (I should know), but I could tell yu the impedance of one! [:0]

You have to be careful when using a Cap for the first time, dont know too much wiring one up but I've heard they can fk you over if you dont charge them or something first.

Persoanally I'd just use a split charge sytem anyway but each to their own....

If theyre charged and yu dischardge it accidently through yourself (not difficult to do), that could be fairly painful.

YO YO YO
JUST BOUGHT FARAD POWER CAP MYSELF HAVING SOME TROUBLE ALO KEEPS BLOWIN THE FUSE AS SOON AS IT GETS CONNECTED TO THE BATTERY
[:(!]
I UPPED THE FUSE TO 30AMP IS STILL BLOWS,

Connected to the + before the amp. The power then flows through it. Not supposed to connect to - (unless own earth).
