Hi,

This is quite a basic question about the ECU as opposed to the majority of ECU questions!

My car has been in the garage for three weeks - it went in for an engine change but has had lots of problems since. The first problem was the key wouldn't work - immobiliser had kicked in. I got the code but now the mechanic is telling me the ECU has completely failed and needs to be reprogrammed. He asked me whether the car had been jump started since the engine seized up in March, because jump starting can cause the ECU to fail - I said no and he hasn't offered any alternative cause for the ECU failure.

I'm concerned that the mechanic might not be too clued up on FIATs and I'm worried that he's going to get me to pay out lots of money to get the ECU sorted.

Do you think the mechanics could have caused the ECU to fail? Someone on here a couple of weeks ago suggested that the mechanics probably caused the immobiliser to kick in, do you think they're also responsible for the ECU failure? What other things can cause an ECU to fail? I'm really worried about the cost and I don't want to be duped into paying out any more than I have to.

Any advice you can give would be much appreciated, thanks guys :)
