i know its prob blasphemous to talk about VW's on this sight but a quick query needs answering.Theres been a big debate in the office at the moment about Golfs.having never owned one i thought experts here cld add comment.

which is faster a Golf 1.9 GT TDI 130bhp vs Gold 1.8 T GTI 150BHP???

the diesel has a 0-60 of 9.3
the petrol has a 0-60 of 8.2

but the key crux in the argument is who would be faster round a track?

here comes the key evidence.........

the diesel has a torque ratio of 310Nm 228lbt
the petrol has a torque ratio of 210NM 155lbt

does this means the diesel edges it round a track?

sorry for wasting your time,

Ruud

Weight, gear ratios, weight distribution, CoG, power delivery etc...

If it was just a case of having more x or more y then it would be easy.

cheers Tom.I know my question is quite immature and doesnt really deserve a response but if you were in my office today youd know why im so determined to get an answer,

ok il ask it another way.

if you were driving against your twin brother(meaning all things were equal) for a date with any women women in the world(adding some excitement) round Silverstone, which car would you choose based on that eveidence?

Petrol, its likely to be somewhat lighter and has faster 0-60.

thats the argument the majority sided with. However there was a strong contingent that thought the extra 1000 on the torque for the diesel would make the difference round a track.

A work mate has got a '55' reg 5 door Golf GTi which he kindly let me try, (he's Italian and it replaced his Stilo Abarth - the traitor!)and it is bloody quick if kept on boost, even compared to his old 2.4 Stilo and more so my VIS 20v Marea - which ain't exactly slow.

Hav'nt driven the diesel, but would expect the petrol to be slightly quicker around most tracks, as engine pick-up is likely to be sharper. Diesels, which despite having greater torque, (and tuning potential, it must be said) often seem to bog-down off-boost and never have the rev. range of a good petrol engine to play with.

Having said that, there would'nt be much in it either way and in an 'overtaking' situation, (40-70 MPH or whatever) the diesel would probably be quicker.

thanks caroll.

basically theres nothing in it is there?

i would like to see what volkswagen think.

Ah Yes, that Top Gear race always nags at the back of the mind when thinking of diesel performance. Although I don't normaly prefer diesels, I have alot of time for the VRs Fabia, (much more than I do for that fat thing BMW call a MINI)

I don't doubt the results they got, but there are a three points to bear in mind in their example -

One, Hamster was driving the MINI, (a
'standard' Cooper remember, not the properly quick 'S') who is'nt normaly as quick as Clarkson and - more to the point - the VW engine in the Skoda is quoted as 130 BHP, but it's been found that the engine often produces nearer 145BHP in standard trim from the factory and so likely even more torque as well.

I've also read that the Fabia has very good traction, (and that the MINI is not so good at this, especialy in the wet)

Still, a close-run thing whichever way you slice it.

wasnt really a fair race though was it as the cooper has a 1.6 petrol engine that chucks about 90bhp and the vrs thing is a 1.9 TURBO deisel.

@ mathew NZ but we dont agree on this subject anyways do we mate lol

hope ure lads var saled through the mot anyways mate.
